Apart from Waller the leading stables in Australia sadly missing.

No Kavanagh, Moody, Waterhouse, Hayes, Cummings, Snowden, O'Shea.

I think we are paddling against the tide.

Railway a good race but hardly a classic Group 1 mile.

I agree...slightly dissapointing field. the way sniper's bullet worked this morning i think he is a huge chance of winning despite the bad barrier and weight.

I think the field is an outstanding one, and realistically the crowds will be know bigger because the big guns aren't here, people don't care.

Rock hard tracks early in this ascot season and some truly startling leader bias dominated days do not help to entice eastern staters....

I think that's almost right. There are a couple of Group 1's over the spring just as weak.

Unfortunately the old Show Day Cup has become one of those. It used to be a great race.

I think if a million dollars can't entice a better field than what we have, then the prizemoney is too high.

And really, let's be realistic, as much as I like Whitefriars, especially when I got $25 last start, he isn't yet a Grp 1 winner. The Winterbottom's status won't be enhanced by this year's race.

Both races should be great but they aren't of genuine Group 1 standard.

As for the WA Derby..... that topic can wait for another day.

Does look Group 2 or 3 standard if Eastern states horses bring their best form they should win but does get harder for a couple with the campaigns they have already had.

most of the big stables aim there horses at the Melbourne spring carival, and are aimed at peaking at this time, and you will find any horse that still has condition , they will send over. (NOT MANY MAKE IT)
Also the hard tracks might be a factor as well.
aND WE KNOW HAYES WILL BRING THEM , WHEN HE KNOWS THEY CAN WIN.

Pity we don't see horses like more joyous , black caviar , hay list , so you think , all silent, larrys never late, niblick, dao dao.

The Toorak without More Joyous would have been a disgraceful Group 1.

They all have the opportunity to come over to the West and good luck to those that do.

They are Group 1 races and that is how they should be, we are entitled to our own piece of glory.

Those that compete in these races still have to win and you can only beat the opposition that is against you on the day.

Most years the Railway and Kingston Town Classic get slagged and I believe unjustifiably.

I've only ever had slow horses and I'd love to have one go around in the Railway.

Exactly, whether it's top line or not, doesn't make the race any easier to win!

Not sure the timing could be much better, perfectly placed two weeks after the Emirates Stakes.

Even the eastern states raiders don't take it lightly - you still gotta win the race on the day against the given opposition, and no WA trainers or jocks are going to be handing the race over - I think this year WA has a few live chances!

Look at last year, All American and Gold Salute were absolute certs to win and ran 11th and 14th respectively. (although there were excuses)

Given we got raided last year, think it's our year to keep some of the excellent prizemoney in WA!

As for the Winterbottom, it has been decimated a fair bit, but if Ortensia turns up, she'll give this one hell of a shake, her run behind Black Caviar first up was certainly good enough to win this again!

timing of the charter flight i think may have something to do with it also? it's the tuesday after the emirates, maybe some trainers would like it to be later in the week possibly?
add most owners in those stables want to win toorak's and emirates and linlithgow's and it's hard to get them to peak against the best competition in cup week, travel to the other side of the country and then peak again in a fortnight.
i probably wasn't old enough to know for sure if it worked and why it didn't but i always liked the compressed carnival of the old days would they think about changing it back now that there is more interest back in perth racing. derby on boxing day wouldn't work anymore but say have winterbottom on boxing day that would give a better flow to the carnival leading into cup day imo there just seems to be a tiny flat spot in it.

Boxing Day always was Derby Day and years before Karrakatta Plate day i agree they need to compress the carnival but i disagree with Linc about the quality of the Railway thats just crap ,Snipers,Black Piran,Trusting,Gathering,Trip Hon,Col Correct ect if they were in average gr-1 s in Melbourne of HK we would all be saying what a great race during the Brizzy winter there gr-1s are basically gr-2s also but we dont bang on about that same old crap every year !!!!!

Well the railway is definitely better than the sir rupert clark and toorak this year...although that isn't saying much. That said, linc is right in saying it is just a good g3 or ok g2 race

if gathering is the 4th best horse in that list then it's not deep.
i'm even thinking about having something on triple honour. but he just doesn't win. its not horrible but it is what it is.

The problem was solved earlier. Theres nothing wrong with the race programming, theres nothing wrong with the prize money but I know for a fact theres plenty wrong with the track and I know I certainly wouldnt risk 2 million dollars worth of gp 1 horse racing it on concrete. But hey Perth Racing loves the slick times and thinks that attracts good horses!! WRONG!! To give you an example I rang up during the week to buy a horse from Melbourne and the owners would not even sell it to me to race it here for fear of it breaking!! And I wasnt the first WA owner he'd said the same thing too!!! Not good business on his part but have to respect his love of horses and also just goes to show what Melbourne really thinks. ARE U READING THIS, THOSE THAT THIS MAJOR PROBLEM CONCERNS!!!

Agree the track is far to hard they love breaking records but they end up breaking down!!!! Murphy and PR reckon they have all the answers any wonder we dont get the A graders over here
