There was a group that operated in Melbourne during the 70's and 80's, and maybe later.

They would send signals from the main/members ring to the outside rings, where in those days you could get set for decent numbers.
There was a public announcement from the main ring to the outside rings, but the guys signalling would be sending prices before the announcements were made.

A long time ago, and my memory may be slightly off, but that's the gist of it,

Similar to what used to happen with the Ledger here in the 60s 70s and 80s at Ascot. They would back one in the main ring and the runners would be off to the ledger. Fielding there was about 10 bookies and you would look up and see this thundering herd heading towards you and you had about 30 seconds to work out which horse it was going to be. Fun days.
