Was pretty confident that Bill Dillon had trained Kendon during his winning streak , but when you mentioned your uncle Eddie Spencer had trained him wasn't sure if eddie had him prior or after, Dillon----------But Bill Dillon had him for his wins at bunbury pinjarra ascot (7). thought he had won about 10 in a row it was nine  trying to equal RACONTEUR record of 10 in a line, he broke down  and was lead back to scale by Treen after the line.,he left the course heavily bandaged, but  later it was discovered to be a chip,Jockey by the name of  I.AUGUSTUS won at least two on him in that sequence.

Whether he ever made it back to the track,  ---after that  no idea--------- he was crowned western Australian horse of the year 70-71.

                                    ---1971------- international jockeys
                                 DETTORI WINS ON STEEL HELMET
Sacked from rest of international series

Wanted expenses paid for women friend.

Mr john reilly secretary of v.a.t.c. who organized the international series for all clubs that dettoris contract had been terminated.-----Reilly said that dettori and his wife had been invited for the series with all expenses paid but Mrs Dettori was unable to make the trip because she was pregnant.

Dettori fronted Reilly  with a women friend and wanted Reilly to authorize her expenses for the rest of the Australian and New Zealand trip. Reilly  I refused point blank and dettori said he would go back to Italy.

Reilly ''' I told him that I could not think of a better idea and the first plane out of Adelaide would                  be the best""

Reilly   Said he had made it clear to Dettori that the race clubs associated with the international                series would not be responsible for any further expenses incurred by him.

Reilly   I don't really know when or if Dettori is leaving Australia or if he already has left, but from              now on he is on his own.

Reilly   I will be making a report to the Italian racing authorities about his conduct.

Those series ran for approx. 6 weeks -----Notice spinkings  mentioned he rode in international races in perth late 70s   so he held no grudge-------surprising the secretary had the power to go bang------needed him in the last 30 years. would have smarten a few up.

Amazed at the detail racebooks from 100 years ago had in regard to race records, with times for distances from 4 furlongs---3miles - in conjuction  with New Zealand racing.

For instance the 5 furlong record was set at riccarton  58sec. carried  11st 6lb. 1904.

plus a page dedicated to western Australian records. the book shows by the time  Eurythmic was ta early threeold - he had held the 5furlong  record . 1mile three furlong 2mile

    I don’t mind a roughie in the last - Luke’s Gold.

Has had a plethora of gear changes and can run well on it’s day.

I’ve just noticed Steve Parnham has replaced Jade but she’s riding a different horse now, still for Rogers :-/

Regardless it matters not, they are both riding in good form.

Going through some old racebooks came across the  1922 Kalgoorlie Cup----- that
Easingwold won. that video mentions his deeds----- First w.a horse to win cox plate.

    Handicap---of 1,000 sovereigns----second horse to receive 200sovs. third horse 100sovs.

The winner of any handicap flat race after the  declaration of weights of the value of over 90 sovs.and up to 130sovs. to the winner to carry a penalty of 5lbs-----over a 130 sovs a penalty of 7lbs.

      Easingwold  9st 6lb    2nd    Drumont   6st. 13lb.   3rd  Sweet Doris  7st 3lb.  4th Jolly Cosy 8st 1lb.

The fourth horse was owned and trained by The Bob Peters  of that era.

P.A.Connolly  who had won six perth cups by 1910-----his horse Blue Spec- won kalg. cup. perth cup 1904, then- Melb. Cup.-moonee valley cups 1905 prizemoney and betting  was 60k.

Piston Broke remember reading your posts regards w.a. horses plus your video clips.from back when---- second to none---Piston did Bill  Dillon also have a horse called Tattered and Torn  sure it went to melb. Harry Wulff rode it can remember one thing Bert Byrant  saying can't believe how short in the irons this jock from the west rides.

But maybe 10-15 years later think des glesson was in charge he wouldn't allow Gavan Duffy to ride in melb.unless he dropped his irons a few holes as he was close to standing on the saddle,

Duffy  refused  so no ground was ever given,  by both parties . Duffy never rode in melb. was the end result.? I believe.

Have to be Igloo wouldn't it stg. It's a worry when you can remember racehorses and you weren't even 10 years old when they were running around.

You got him runyon. IGLOO.  what a horse 2nd in coxplate&,caulfield cup,& melb. cup prior to coming to perth..
  • JayJayJayJay    8,623 posts
I was thinking Archer was born in Jembaicumbene but I dont think STG goes back that far!!! And that Tommy Smith was also born there. "Father" Pike might have been the one that rehabilitaed him prior to going back to Tommy but that is just a very vague recollection that I may have read somewhere. No idea who the owner was but the "freeze my pets" idea rings some sort of bell.

1.Had no idea what a troika was until goggle. but the owner was lady called Elizabeth Whitney Tippett. what a interesting lady from goggle.2. champion twoyearold she owned was porterhouse.

3.Percy Sykes was born in the sudan. 4. Ernest John (Midge) Didham won the melb. cup on bagdad note was igloo's jockey prior to sale 5.Striking resemblance in colour hgt. to Phar Lap.6 cox.caulfield, melb cups 2nd.  7.Tommy Smith 8..

Jay Jay  think Mrs Tippett paid either 50 or 100k. for igloo---in around give or take a year or two think Western Australia pacer Mount Eden was sold for 266,000.thousand to the yanks as well. was the same bloke who brought juniors image? peanut king.

Donuts STG, not peanuts. Bob McArdle and Eddie Sims had an option on Juniors Image PRIOR to the Christchurch Interdominion series that Juniors won and then sold him to the founder of American Dunkin Donuts, businessman Bill Rosenberg, for whom he raced very well. Same fellow paid the alleged $300,000 for Mount Eden after his Miracle Mile win and subsequent Tour De Force around Australia time trialing at every available venue .....and filling them up. He never raced in America although he did complete an impressive qualifying trial prior to breaking down and going to stud......although some say he was gone before he went to America, having to be scratched from his last scheduled start at Gloucester Park.

Seems prior to the inters Juniors Image was heavily supported 40/1. understanbly to start 6/1 final night. betting ledgers showed 70,000 was won on the horse with biggest recorded bet by a western Australian punter was a cash transaction placed at  penrith nsw. the bet 10,000 to 500 eachway. it was placed a week before the first round of heats.

These are from paper articles--------you be the judges. The day before series  started -------.It was announced that there would be spot swabbing throughout the series. This could be done even for the grand final.

The owner didn't attend the inters mrs ,Ethel Johnson who was to ill to travel; The horse was sold by Coulson on behalf of the owner to two Australians acting as agents for international bloodstock agency for 35k and they then sold him to a American prior to the grand final . first prizemoney for final was 26k. a deposit was handed over.

The donut king must have been a fair man knowing it returned a positive swab, was quoted he was still prepared to buy the horse provided he was not  disqualified from racing by the trotting conference.

Peter Johnson the owner's husband, frst knew of the positive swab. When he was told by WATA.officials that he must return the gold cup, which would be kept at the wata office until the inquiry was completed.Mr Johnson had not heard from phil Coulson.at this time

Paper Article stats Phil Coulson  said '''I don't know if the stewards announced that a swab would be taken from the grand final winner" he said If this was announced, I did not hear it.

Another interesting part -- quote at the time The horses swabbed at trotting meetings in N.Z.are selected  by the stipendiary stewards. Not all winners are swabbed and usually two or three horses are selected.--It is usual for the winners of major races to be swabbed and often other place getters  in the same race.

Coulson great trainer, terrific driver, wonder was it the result of a spot swab taken during the  series,--but coulsons  statement throws a spanner on that?
