Race 9 at Newcastle today - should be an entertaining race to watch - the field includes the ex WA horse Art Tutor ( who amazingly is only 6 - seems to be around forever - Bob Poolman had it down at Albany

Art Tutors last 2 wins at Penrith have been out of this world 1.55 flat for 10 and a half furlongs . But its last start win at double figure odds outside of the back row over the short trip - the work it did - thats one of the biggest wins i have seen on a provincial track

Its fave today but backable - but why it will be a good watch - is how it is driven - the young kid on it - its just handle bars down and let the thing run - and heaven help if anything wants to park it - it will be action from the word go- so swoopers will have every chance if the are good enough

If he drives it like he drove Silly Sid at Penrith in race 4 yesterday, it will be interesting alright. He and the other lad involved on Kezzamac engaged in a two horse war and are both rightfully on inquiry.

The Memorial trotting race at Penrith yesterday was a great race as well - a miracle win

Fancy ..... looked impossible on the bend. That race had a lot going for it.....the distance, a stand, proper handicapping, in fact the only true handicapping.....I don't know the horses from Adam but, agree, it was a great spectacle. A 3 year old filly against a lot of tough old horses, looks to have high speed.

Interesting card at Northam tomorrow night on one of the rare non GP "Prime" Tuesdays.
    9 races all full fields.
Northam appears to have a formula people are happy to race in.
Recent refinements including 10 horse maximum field size & inclusion of a 169m sprint lane on the 825m circuit & generally catering for evenly graded horses in the larger lower end pool of classes seems to be having a positive impact on field size .

  • MarkovinaMarkovina    3,328 posts
Agree with that - i think the reduction in the field size has helped alot

One thing i was going to mention about Northam a few weeks back - and there are a few possibilities re why to the answer

But the lighting at Northam shiits all over GP - Northam - you watch a replay - horses in the back straight - they are illuminated - compare that to GP - it is semi darkness in comparism

Northam do seem to have a lighter colour surface than GP  and maybe because there arernt the advertising awnings in the back straight - and other lights in the background everything is illuminated better

Or the other possibility - is it comes down to picture quality - and the other thing at Northam - the horses dont seem to be a million miles away in the back straight - even though Northam is a slightly bigger track

Maybe a better fit Northam on Tuesdays  ---EIGHT-ODDS ON  Favourites at Pinjarra today----Northams meeting allows for spread of winners to the  battlers  The Eight leading trainers on State board only two have runners at Northam  between them  Turvey has (2)  & J.Prentice (1) in the 89 runners.down to run.

    Well, it was certainly entertaining.

C Voak today in stand at Pinjarra.
Won’t go down in the history books but one of the drives of the year.
Not many drivers will put themselves out there and run like that over 2600 and run a $1.40 favourite off its feet.
Brilliant drive and unfortunately we don’t see enough of it in WA.
And no I didn’t back it.

Yep, agree...brilliant. Has done it many times before, one sticks in my mind California Dreams about 10 years ago at GP.

If you read alot of stewards reports - and supplementary reports which i do - id love a quid for how many times - iv read - look i dont think this horse backed up from its tough run - at such and such track - 5-6 days days ago

Not doubting them at all -however over the journey - horses  who have a start - just 1 day ( the next day ) after their previous run - i think they have got an excellent record- and that does not put me off one iota - backing them

A  good example- last night at Albury - Hanover Sunshine - i backed it at the fixed odds of   $12 . The previous day it raced at Cobram - and it was an outstanding run - but more to the point - you could not have a more brutally tough run - incident at the bell - broke - got shoved 3 wide - and it just kept coming

Like i say - over many years - horses who run the previous day/night - theve got a pretty good record the following run - the next day/night - i reckon sometimes it sharpens them up .

You look at the gallops - Lee Freedman - quite often - on big race meetings - and with top liners like Mahogany - 5am race morning - he would school them over   the jumps - and in Lees words - to sharpen them up

Bolta - the ex WA horse - came with a fantastic run at Redcliffe - to win in a screamer of a finish

Note to Gary Hall Jnr... If you are wearing that bank robber style mask to fight covid then you are kidding yourself. You cannot catch covid driving in a trot race and indeed extremely remote chance you can catch it outdoors.

Some entertaining racing at Narrogin last night - and some nice wagers landed on Justlike Turbo

I had a small e/w bet - but mid Sat afternoon - it was 16 -$17 - where as i see it started  at $7 . I thought its run at Bubbury was as good as Shane Youngs horse - and they ran 1/2 last night

Shannon S to the fore with 4 of the 7 winners - however i thought his best drive - was actually  his losing drive ( on The Party Boy - which i was on ) - bit of mid race action - so when that settled - straight to the breeze - and down the back - hes gone 28.6 to try to pinch it - but the favourite was just too talented

Poor old Voaky hey - i actually felt sorry for him in the end - because Shannon just put him to the absolute sword in so many races

14 races across Narrogin last night and Collie today....Shannon and Emily won 12 of them, including the Joe and Margaret Memorial race. Loved the first winner of the day and the westbred bonuses. 7day holiday for SJS on Gee Smith at Narrogin.

After our horse got another bad check the other day from a driver carelessly shifting ground, I've decided to tally the penalties for each driver for shifting out/crossing for each driver, which to me are the most dangerous driving moves. We've had horses come off the track with deep lacerations, injured tendons, sore backs, flattened tires etc due to driver carelessness and driver aggressiveness and I feel it is getting worse and worse. It's only a matter of time before a horse falls or breaks a leg.

There's a driver that has had 2 cautions, 4 reprimands, 4 reminding of obligations, 1 telling to take more care and one no action taken for shifting ground carelessly (either in or out) since July which has tightened, inconvenienced, flattened tires, broken up, advantaged another runner or checked another horse.
Another driver has 2 reminding of obligations and 1 reprimand.
Another has 3 reminding of obligations, 1 telling to take more care, 2 reprimands and 1 fine.
Yet another hobby driver got a 10 day suspension for 1 occurrence.
This is only taken from the steward reports - not the instances that didnt get reported, where there was no driver at fault, or when it was the horse's fault.

Too often the run to the finish line excuses a horse hanging its head off and inconveniencing other horses but shouldn't a driver straighten a horse first before continuing to drive it to the line?

I feel like some of these drivers should take up a career in law in the way they talk themselves out of a penalty every single time.

You are no Robinson Crusoe. I had one forced 3 wide in an abrupt move off the pole line coming in for the bell, broke my horse up, the offender then almost immediately dropped out to be beaten over 20 metres, almost certainly cost my horse 2nd place. Not a mention in the report, just an FW (forced wide ) annotation in the results.. There may well have been further "discussion" but nothing in the stewards report.

Harness NSW is seeking submissions for topics for their annual roadshow. Wonder if RWWA is holding one again this year

The Interdominion series to be shown on Sky Thoroughbred Central. Something I never thought I would see

VLandy's cut his teeth via years of promotion of the Miracle Mile as CEO of HRNSW so no doubt he had a big hand in this cross promo. Very good .... some excellent Harness TV presenters on the eastern seaboard.

Good crowd on Friday night at GP.
Knew the fireworks were on but didn’t realise it was Italian night.
Wondered why there were so many Merc’s and BMW’s in the car parks. Lots of gold chains too. Haha

    B-)

Sad announcement from Busselton Trotting Club today. Local institution Beryl Sutton passed away. Beryl was known to all as a trainer and in latter years, the "numbers" lady in the stabling area, and a friend to all. Anyone who has ever raced a horse at Busso would be well aware of Beryl's smiling face and her great contribution to the sport.

Someone has misread the name for the trot at Pinjarra today on Ray Grantham Memorial meeting.
Assuming it should be Cranwell Jack and not Craw Well Jack.
  • Raymond John could pass as it was his name but I thought it was meant to be named after the horse, Raymon John.

Raymon John's sister was Pamy June. Proof readers no longer exist, usurped by useless spell checkers.

On Twitter Alan Parker eluded to the fact that Cranwell Jack was Ray's first winner. Definitely not Craw Well Jack.

Talking through my kick but you won't see many better drives than that of Chris Lewis on Soho Party Girl in the first at GP.
