Dan could of been there in the room but he would of been 10 lengths in front of them when the photo was taken. :))
He won the Bunbury Cup as an apprentice in 1964 too.

The following link takes you to a google maps aerial shot of metropolitan Perth from 1965 https://maps.google.com/gallery/details?id=zkHU3l6hb1io.kNXqYfjXakaI It is simply brilliant.

I have taken the liberty of snapping some screen shots of interest to this thread:

    1. GP and WACA

    2. Herdsman Parade (note the raining tracks)

    3. Cannington

    4. Midvale

    Tommy Graham (Kabooki)

Kabooki was a grand front runner from memory.

When Irish eyes are smiling......Tommy had some fortune a short while ago with a healthy return from Favourite Numbers.

They brought the grandstand down when Kabooki was just beaten by Allegation in the Perth Cup who was owned by leading bookmaker Rod Evans. Allegation was not a popular winner. As a little fella in the ledger could hear the noise, hissing and booing coming from the enclosure, it was an amazing experience that I will never forget. Kabooki and Tommy Graham were the popular underdogs and Allegation I think had been a bit dissapointing it's previous run, some of the older boys might recollect better. But the passion punters displayed back in those days was amazing. Glad I grew up in that era.

It's a great thing about life too... Losing on Kabooki for Graham would have been heartbreaking but one day many years later the tide turned with a healthy return on Favourite Numbers.. Sometimes you just have to be patient!

Sadly you'd be escorted to the nearest exit these days!

Yes that's true. All the pity. A lot of the things called out were quite funny too. I don't think the jockeys minded much at all. It created an atmosphere that you can't manufacture. As long as language is watched and it's done in the right way I think it's a good thing. I've cursed jockeys and then cheered them home for a great ride just one race later. All done in good spirit. But I guess it's a fine line these days between banter and abuse. I think punters on track curse just as much as ever but it's kept under their breath. I think it's better to let it out. Tricky one though.

He wasn't that rough Allegation was he ? 8/1??? I have a feeling Kabooki was a longer price... But gosh the booing was relentless.

The smarties would have cleaned up on Allegation no doubt! Never saw Helena Vale but can remember reading the trial results in the newspaper , must have been used for trials and track work for a while after closing down as a racetrack ? Richmond Raceway was a pretty oasis opposite East Fremantle oval. Sad thing once racetracks and trotting tracks are closed down they are gone forever.

He won a lot more than a few hundred last time and it was in the thousands... plenty of them. I'm guessing a few Irish theme Pubs were celebration locations in the time that followed.

    Great photos! Thanks for posting.

The booing for Allegation was because he was beaten at 3s on 2 or 3 days before at wfa in a 5 horse field and he was owned by Rod Evans. I think he was about 10 or 12/1 on Cup Day. Allegation and Kabooki ran several big race quinellas from memory - unfortunately Kabooki usually second.

Crowds booing an upset result or protest they didn't agree with added plenty of colour and atmosphere in those days. The biggest demonstration I recall was Frank Treen being booed after Kilrickle ran second to the favourite La Trice in the 1970 Railway and then won the race on protest for interference very early in the race. They booed Treen every time he appeared to ride for the rest of that day and the next meeting. I was happy. Treen was my favourite jockey and I backed Kilrickle!

The Leger also brings back memories. Tony Pitsikas one of my favourite Leger bookies.

Uncle Ted (Sullivan) trained Kilrickle...was there that day.....there was plenty of heat after the protest which was (and is) still talked about ...I think Kilrickle buttered up a week later and ran 2nd in the Perth Cup....a really top horse, as was La Trice.  Aunty Sylvia scored a new frock for Cup Day courtesy of the protest decision haha.
That earlier photo of Herdsman Parade shows Phil Coulson's place very clearly...before the flats were built. Great location to train horses.

Frank was a great mate of my dads...what a tragic end....similar to tiger mores.
franks wife was a very attractive lady, joan, I think and was a regular racegoer after franks death,
they were both great jocks along with "foxy" moxham, peter moran, and the great money rider jack ingram..
rarely did jack get beaten when the dough was on.
its all different now.....I remember one day glen davies was riding something and old "Verna" told me that it could not be beaten....I had $500 on the nod with Rod...I was just out of nappies...sort of...and it won. you think Rod did not pay out on me?
asked me to lunch that week, went to the carlton hotel, which he owned and when the bill came (must have been arranged), he just slid it over to me. geez I loved that guy.
his old home in Walcott st..just down the road from me is on the market for 1.2mio....wonder whats buried in the backyard? I can tell you....F**k all.... :((

hey, jj, did ted train the winner of the diggers cup about 3 times with al dakhil...or was that ted jamieson?
I met up with "uncle ted" when he took gilt pattern to Sydney, met up with him and he said "kid, this thing is a certainty"...I think bill camer or darby McCarthy rode him.
it won and I bought a unit at Cremorne....

Ive forgotten a lot of the leger bookies by name but I can still see their faces, and Tony Pitsikas is one bookie I can definitely remember . Good man. Loved the little eastern states ring at the back, on course prices relayed over the p.a . A few shady trees and seats to have a chat with fellow punters. Their was a special 5$ and later a $10 tote window I think ,for the big punters! Can remember standing on my toes trying to look bigger and older to put a bet on the tote. Some let me on some didn't. But trying to listen to the bets being placed at the $5 window was good fun. Somebody putting bets on that big just had to be right! My dad was good friends with the Brentnalls who were former great East Perth football players and identities. The father who would have been about 90 use to call me the jonah.

Don McKee worked in the Leger for many years. Doug Goodchild and Lawley Edwardes were other names I remember.

Don McKee who never won was asked on telethon day how he was going and he replied "how am I going even Fat Cat backed the last winner".

Yes Don McKee! Great stuff. The old tote board showing the dividends was a classic too. Can remember red lines for the win and white lines for the place I think.

Falc, Al Dakhil a bit before my time and I am not too familiar with Thoroughbred records. However, Ted was who they were thinking of when they coined the word "gentlemen trainer". He married into our family when my Aunt Sylvia' remarried after losing her husband, Lew McNair (just 36 years old), father of current day Gosford trainer John. Ted was an older bloke by then but the Kilrickle days were great. He won the Guineas and maybe the St Leger as well as plenty of other races prior to that sensational Railway Stakes. He was a great old fella.
