Starting to think this could be the growth area for racing in WA great way to get people back to the track back as it did in a big way early in Australian history and still does to some Picnic meets over East see Bongo Bongo huge turn out in NSW.
Where are the current meetings mid west Yalgoo etc, thinking they could expand the Avon meetings Toodyay and another Beverley? also the Great Southern has Pingrup and Kojonup could have another to encourage a circuit of sorts for budding horse trainers/heavy jockeys and slow horses of which there are plenty also is Kulin still going went years ago good day and night for that matter.
Not sure do these meetings make money? what happens with tab betting on course?
Just throwing this out there for some opinions.

Great post mate. 100% agree. Although not a picnic meeting was so happy to see the York track being rebuilt. Love seeing the smaller communites get behind their annual race meets. I'd love to see more picnic racedays and am looking forward to heading to Kojonup on Feb 16.

My local was merriwa in central NSW. the 280m straight was severly uphill and the course swept around the top of a big hill so you really only got to see the last 50m. God knows what went on the rest of the race unless you were up a tree.

and we would go to walabadah on new years day. a big tree on the turn had the jockeys deciding which way to go.....

For the record, the famous picnic meeting in NSW is Bong Bong, not Bongo Bongo :-j
Another great picnic meeting from NSW is Come-By-Chance.

only been to a few - including Moora last year - but Mrs Rio and I have started planning a 14 day trip through Vic/NSW going to as many country(not necessarily picnic) meetings as we can jam in..Really enjoy that type of racing..not often high quality but always competitive......and i mean the people as much as the horse racing!!!

Yep Rio still a nice feeling for the winners doesn't matter where. Let us know how your trip goes there is a good web site on Victorian picnic meetings maybe WA should have one as well. v lahs I include York as s Picnic venue like Bong Bong they can draw a big crowd for 1 or 2 meetings a year. Does Beverly track still exist? Or where else were race meetings held earlier in the Perth Avon area?

    big night out vlahs..a 3.00am post...? :!!
i thought the picnic/local meets were stymied because of the requirement of security guards. they cannot afford them. years ago a few of the beefy local lads were told..."keep an eye on things for us will you boys, make sure there is no trouble. there's a drink in it for you..". now bloody hr and pc have us by the knackers... :-q

went to bong bong once....jeez what a day!! went in a chartered bus..lets just say the trip back to sydney was pretty messy.

Take a drive to Mingenew on the 9th march, the facilities are amazing for 1 race per year !

Fair enough Falcon will be attempting to get to a couple of these meetings this year was thinking more of Kojonup or Pingrup how far is Mingenew? (love the name)

goose, isn't it the requirement for security thats hampering picnics?

No idea not sure what is stopping them maybe lack of volunteers :-\" just think it is a great way to attract more supporteres to racing. That was what I was wondering do they make any money out of turnover ?

i am pretty sure they HAVE to have security...usually an ethnic roaming around looking important and sinister.
    and, they do come cheap...
