Does anyone have any experience using lasix in training to prevent bleeding?
With all the evidence to show that it does not enhance a horses performance but greatly reduces the chance of a bleed will this ever be legal here for race day administration?

In the USA where Lasix is legal but must be declared if a horse starts using it, punters have a rule which says
always back a horse first up when it starts on lasix.

I think it is considered as a masking agent for other drugs, so doubt they will legalise the use of it in Australia.....

My understanding is it is only legal in the US...and it is also about to be banned there as well. agree with Arlo, a newcomer on lasix is a good bet, as is a horse first time using it. It can help with large improvements to performance. I have no idea whether it has long term effects on a horses health.

Lasix is a duiretic. Commonly called "piss pills" when jockeys could still take them. Basically it just dehydrates the horse, therefore lowering blood pressure and in theory reduces lung bleeding.

I think you will find it is permissable in some other countries - several South American regions ( track times from Sth Am are meaningless), Greece, Canada ( conditional), The Phillipines ,

Yes it is and while most of those countries can get hot,I don't believe they get as hot as us.I believe it is a diutretic as Bruebaker says but ultimately in our Ascot season that affect would ultimately lead to severe dehydration and heart failure.

Thank you, can you tell me why Sth American track times are meaningless please? Cos of the use of lasix or another reason? Cheers.

Track times are meaningless in South America (well ARG, BRZ, CHI, VEN & URU at least) due to them taking a time from a point in advance of the start. it is somewhere around 20m ( give or take 20m) - the theory is that it is the true/total speed that the horsetakes to cover the 'distance' but of course over time it has seen the start effected from the true distance marker, yet the timing is still taken from in advance. Have a look at some ARG and BRZ times for sprints and you will see that even moderate horses are running ridiculous times.
My reference to times does not relate to lasix at all - it was merely a byline - sorry for interupting your thread.

PS. actually the use of lasix is not yet banned in USA racing - it is only destined to be banned in Kentucky for 2 yo from 2014/ for 3yo from 2015 and for all others in or by 2016. No other state has accepted this policy albeit that Kentucky did adopt the lasix free policy for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile this year ( well last year - now ) :-t -
