Watching the box seat tonight I couldn't help but notice P Hall on Texan.

For those of you who understand the whip rule can you tell me if it was a contravention. (16 June when beaten by Bombora).

Do they police it in WA?

For the record this is not a witch hunt as I am a fan of Hally but I am just curious.

very rarely is it policed in WA.
I remember a race at Barker or Albany one day and the horse was belted every stride from just after turning to the finishing post.
    Rider shall remain nameless.
  • Can you announce the stewards who fail to police the rule? Or are they nameless as well?
  • the box seat? im assuming its a racing show. can anyone provide info, times and channel please..

Got a feeling that is the job of the chief steward..or the way it is so hit and miss maybe the integrity committee!!!! I'll make a wild suggestion here - i could easily be wrong and i haven't done it cos i don't have the time, need or desire to prove the point - watch a random selection of 20 races and I'd be surprised if you don't find at least 1 whip usage rule breach that has gone by without a comment in the stewards report.

Could be wrong....but i doubt it!!!!!

I was watching the replay that night with a senior jockey in WA and I brought up that exact point to him. He asssured me that Hally was holding the whip backhand, he is one jock that can still get plenty of punch in his action holding it that way.

cant possibly see how it was backhand?

Yep my mistake. I was talking about the race that Texan won last weekend, didn't take any notice when he ran second.

Even so, to me it looked obvious (in the race that he won) that Hally was whipping forehand from a long way out. But as I said, I was assured by someone who would know it was definitely backhand.

I love Hally as a rider, but he still has the old fashioned style with legs kicking and arms flayling, perhaps it is deceiving??

Hally, got to love his vigor 8)
It has been said to me on more than one occasion that his whip use is fine (i wouldnt have a clue). Definitely gets every inch out of his mounts and certainly can get a horse going from the 600m

Hally getting down to 54.5kg mid winter was a big effort. Going well the old fella.

Here's Hally's style. His arm definitely goes forwards, but he is holding the whip backhand.

    Forward arm action:

Yep - just take a photo copy of the List of officials - they are all guilty of oversight when it is a whip issue - and those that are in charge at the mid weeks are just plain - well my mate Freddie reckons he is going to lend them his braille racebook !!! - too many trickters getting it the way they want.
  • Seems like a lot of punters don't know the proper whip rules
