They have the driver interview on the news link now. He is upset with the turf club.

Assume the references to Belmont should actually read Ascot ?

If this happened in the project i'm on they would shut the job down and not re-start until safe to do so!
Incidents like this have the potential to kill people not just the horses!
They really need to do something about securing the area so that horses can not escape. And it doesn't matter how much it costs, these all to regular occurances are an unacceptable risk in an industry that is already way too dangerous!
Here's another insurance claim and/or litigation that PR will need to settle.

Anyone know what the name of the horse was, or whose stable it was?

that is a very selfish, unwarranted comment, Diva.... :x

I have suggested on several occasions over the years and as recently as the last incedent, at a trainers meeting, that the precinct of Ascot should be cordoned of and each street cul de sac'd, with Epsom Ave the only exit/entry point, to prevent this happening again. My suggestion was mooted, being too radical or expensive and it was too much to have all the inhabitants (horse and non horse people) "inconvenienced".
It is only a matter of time when it happens again, not if it happens but when!
as proved by this recent tragedy.
Maybe when they are widening the Great Eastern highway in front of Ascot, they might act on this

I always tell myself how important it is to "stay focused" when working with horses on race day. As friendly and well behaved as they generally are they can still be unpredictable at any tick of the clock (as many other animals can be too).

Very sad news and I pass on my condolences to the car driver, the trainer and owners of the horse the and the jockey or track work rider who unfortunately came off.

heard on 6pr that it was a horse working on the sand, dumped it's rider then made it's way threw an open gate escaped.....so possibly the same horse!!!...this was what was told from the bosses at Perth Racing to the driver of the car who was being intervied on 6pr this morning!!!

hope that is not the case because that horse was going quite slowly in real terms, having run a complete lap on the sand. It couldn't be the same horse as the one in the accident looks to be a bay and I think the loose one this morning was a gray

you'd have heard if it one of simons, matt. unless that blowie is still buzzing around in his gullet and he can't talk...
probably belongs to some little ozzie battler with no insurance.

no doubt there will be some litigation, repairs to the car, mental anguish etc.
who is liable..the custodian of the horse or the turf club? moot point!!!
  • A real tragedy for all concerned.

While on the topic of horses and cars, does anybody know how Warrick Proudlove is doing ? He's the young Claremont footballer who while traveling on the Albany H'way north of Mt Barker, was seriously injured in a motor accident after hitting a straying horse.

That was back in July and news is slow to get around if it's good ... last heard he wasn't fairing very well.

Have fingers crossed and chucked a 20 in a Proudlove Foundation tin ... hope the young fella is ok.

You may need to speak to The Lands Office / State Govt / Belmont City Council re the rezoning into R100 blocks of all that currently zoned R10 house and stables area. Otherwise you will wipe millions of dollars off the value of the property holdings of 250 or so land owners

So when this is done, where do they relocate to ?

Gen's suggestion is the one that needs to be put in place - I can't believe how horse people are so against a safety initiative such as this!

It'll only take one death, and watch the s&#t fight then!

What will be the next outcome of a loose horse on GT Eastern Hwy, perhaps a family with kids in the car, blocking all entrances to the area is the only solution I agree with Gen, leave Epsom avenue as the only entry point from Gt eastern highway. Put a manned boom gate there for cars to enter during trackwork hours.
Diva take it from someone who has lost a horse the same way, it dosn't matter what its breeding is, it is devistating
and affects a lot of people owners trainers riders.

Manned boom gate - err no.
Horse proof barrier with swipe card access for residents and industry people maybe. Or just leave the Epsom Ave access only. Chances are the horse will run up one of the other (blocked off) side-streets b4 Epsom

CHANCES???? Lives of the public and horses need not to be left to CHANCES! Swipe cards for a gate is a good idea
