which kiwi horse?
JAY ROONEY, The West Australian December 6, 2010, 7:05
The BMW Perth Cup is firmly on the radar for classy Ranger, who is likely to bypass the Landscape Development CB Cox Stakes on Saturday week in favour of the ATA Handicap four days later.
Ranger bounded into Perth Cup (2400m) calculations with a barnstorming run in the Kingston Town Classic (1800m) on Saturday when he flew home from last to run fifth to Playing God.
Leading owner-breeder Bob Peters said yesterday that the ATA Handicap (2200m) on December 22 was Ranger's likely launching pad into the $400,000 Perth Cup on January 1.
"It was quite good and certainly the fastest final 600m of the race," said Peters.
"We've always had the Perth Cup in mind. We might try and avoid the Cox and go to the handicap race."
Stablemate Tranquility, 10th in the Kingston Town, is likely to tackle the La Trice Classic (1800m) for fillies and mares on December 22 before the cup.
"She'll go to the mares race and we'll see how she goes after," Peters said.
Peters is likely to nominate Heart Ache, Talent Show and Highest Honour for Saturday's Starstruck Classic (1600m) - the third leg of the fillies and mares series.
He said there was no explanation for Heart Ache's failure when last all the way in the Jungle Dawn Classic (1400m) Saturday week ago, with tests clearing her of any abnormalities.
Jockey William Pike has a big decision pending with Brandy Lane joining Ranger and Tranquility as his options for the Perth Cup. He guided Brandy Lane to a gutsy win in Saturday's GA Towton Cup (2200m) at Ascot.
"Things just didn't go his way before but they did on Saturday," trainer Ray Saw said.
"He's entered for the Cox, but we'll see what else is nominated. I'm sure the further they go, the better he'll like it."
Got to remember - the straight is the same length. Extra distance is at the start of the race, not the end.
Hardrada and Storm Alert both only won up to 1600m, although Storm Alert was placed in the VRC Oaks.
Out of the family Lawmaker was the only one to really get a trip and he was by Old Spice.
Ranger being by Testa you would have to wonder.....
I did not see him barnstorming on saturday, got over a couple of tired horses, has no hope in the world of beating I Jeuney, cant see him running a strong 2400, but the Perth Cup now is a joke of a race,
Doubt IJ will be in it. Copped 11 points for running 2nd  , so would have to carry too much weight now
different rules should apply.
according to the template that gets you 60.5 in an open handicap.
it ran 5th in a stronger race(and a hcp) last time with 52 and stayed on 90.
you've been done over tivers, especially after looking at what has happened to others in the race.
more evidence for me about what i already knew.
So hard to get a good one, then as soon as you do they handicap them out.
All the effort and noise the club makes about trying to attract good horses and upgrade races, yet the good ones they have they (the other powers) shoo away.
Puzzling..............
therefore the same rules should not apply, and you can't re-handicap horses the same as if it was a handicap.
whatever, tivers, you should probably disagree with anything i say, coz i know i am in your handicappers bad books, although i have no idea why, as i just tell the truth as i see it.
you may get looked on more favourably then!
Those contributors to this forum connected with the horse were unlucky on Saturday but congratulations on having such a talented and honest performer and we hope there are quite a few more wins in store for you.
Guess the odds i will get will be better than expected then
Horse has too many tricks, jock stated publicly last week 'he can't be ridden like the best horse in the race'.
One thing finishing off in a 1.49 1800, finishing off in a 2400 where they won't be dawdling is a different kettle of fish (unless the tactics on a certain little grey mare have changed  )
Trainer/owner seem to be in love with Perth Cup, EVERYTHING is set for it
Agree, the owner is obsessed with this race. I wouldnt be heading there with TRANQUILITY though
Testa Rossa did sire Testafiable, who won a SA Derby and Testa Grande, who won a Canberra Cup.
What's to say Ranger can't run a trip?
