    MEGATIC Go you good thing
  • i spoke to someone that knew connections of Hartley's and they said leading up to the railway that if the horse didnt come out and run a decent race and show kind of form, it was to be retired...
i guess the horse still has alot more racing ahead of it after its cracker in the railway, i'll be on it with a small investment each way but Guyno is the one to beat for mine!![/b]

Lambton Castle was excluded from the field at the handicappers discretion yet Midtime was allowed in??????

    Betchya Lindsay Smith is furious.

Some fantastic gallopers have won this over the years and the best have even won it twice including Old Comrade and Summer Beau.

For mine this race will always have a lasting place in Australian racing history and I hope it never loses its current title. Superstarts to have won from the east include the mighty Kingston Town plus Betten Loosen Up, Vo Rogue, Military Plume, and Family Of Man (x2)

How can a horse be excluded when there isn't a capacity field?
Surely if Mr Smith nominated the handicapper couldnt use his discretion untill final declarations are taken???
    Maybe Lindsay never accepted.......

    Cheers

According to racing radio this morning the horse was accepted for, the handicapper deemed it not good enough to get a run because it didnt have a city win.
  • TiversTivers    7,720 posts
    They can do that.

Apparently so - yet we see horses with terrible form line up week after week in city class and get beaten 10+ lengths.

Its not like Lambton Castle has been struggling - Mr Smith has been placing it to win and it has clearly been dominant - I would have felt it deserved to go round if the owners were prepared to pay the entry fee.

Im certain it wouldn't have been the roughiest chance in the race.

Thats disgracefull......very unfortunate for the horses connections.

    Cheers

Quite reguarly though trainers do get told by the stewards not to bring a certain horse back again. (go through some stewards reports and have a look).
  • TheDivaTheDiva    13,248 posts
why would you restrict the runners in an already depleted race?
the carnival has been lacking enough already this year and the handicapper takes it upon himself to strangle it even further?
I think Lambton Castle would have been an interesting runner.
If he has such discretion, why didnt he refuse half the field from the Aquanita last weekend??
  • TiversTivers    7,720 posts
Would have actually have called off the race rather if they were going to do that. Considering there ended up being only 6 1/2 lengths between first and last !!!

yeah I did know that - was conviently not mentioning it - they could do the same with Lambton - let it run, then send it back to provincials - I doubt they would need to tho

quality of fields has been poor all carnival and now they are taking a stand against a particular horse saying it is not worthy? (A horse that has won four in a row mind you, trained by a bloke who has proven he can pull off the big wins).

    What an absolute disgrace.

Would Lambton Castle be @ $201 on fixed odds? I think not.

This horse is flying and I admit that it would be difficult to see it winning but if you have owners willing to throw their horse in the deep end only to be told "Sorry but even though we do not have a full field in our states second biggest race, your horse cannot run".

Very ordinary decision which doesn't seem to have taken him too long to make.

David Hunter, once again, take a good hard look at yourself.

Can we add Lambton Castle to the poll.

Is this gospel, or are you relying on Racing Radio ? . Bet this has happened in the Cox Plate and similar ilk of race.
  • rompzrompz    206 posts
i agree with not letting it run , it aint proved it self here to race in the second biggest race in wa, wat if it gets in the way of the horse ur on or own and blocks it for the run or severly checks it then im sure people would be saying the oppisite saying how can a horse with no city wins get into the race
  • petersstablepetersstable    62 posts
It has happened in the Cox Plate before and that horse was Elvstroem when he was a 3yo. The rest is history.

This race is not in the same ilk so cannot compare.

If this was a full field - then fine ballot it out - BUT its not.

If your a punter, without owners you would have nothing to punt to on (at the races that is).

If your owner, your horse is in very good form (it beat a metro winner at its last start), what would you do/how would you feel.

Very hard to swallow for connections in my opinion.
  • RodentRodent    7,446 posts
Change the race to an invitation if you're going to do that (exclude LC). I disagree with the decision but I guess if you give discretionary powers, this can happen. The horse has never been beyond 1400m and never raced in town so I guess it's not the worst decision ever. He would have been an interesting runner nonetheless.

I would like to get an official version from David Hunter instead of all the speculation. What everyone is saying may be true but then again it may not. There are several variables here.

I shall endeavour to find out this morning.......stand by !
