Northam Cup Day

West Australian Racing
Big meeting

Hoping to turn my fortunes around after a losing effort yesterday

  • Would be interested to hear people thoughts on the Northam Cup being reduced to 1600m.

Looking back through past runnings and at this years list of runners there is no doubt the quality has improved significantly.

Given the race is worth $100k and has 6 listed or group winners engaged this year plus the emerging Tudor Lad I think the profile has lifted.

Looking at the Boulder Cup field which has listed status and is worth the same prizemoney one could start to argue that the Northam Cup should be looked at for Blacktype in future years esp given its proximity to the summer carnival.

Northam gets the thumbs up from me for the way they have position this race in the calender, just about guaranteed a capacity field where it is - shame the weather is not just a bit better as its deserving of a big crowd.

    Morning Della,

It makes sense to me and it has certainly attracted a very good field. Owners of stayers however might have a differring view.

On the race itself, there should be some good speed. Was really impressed with Hawkeye Mort's and Lambton's Castle first up runs and with the new arrival Majorca, just adds to the interest.

    BOM still saying 32 degrees.............

Were only 8 degrees out yesterday though.
  • Its not the 32 degrees Im talking about - its the strong easterly winds and the prediction of thundery showers

Who cares about wind and rain, if it's 32 degrees..............

Almost every race of 2000m or more will attract a better quality field if its distance is reduced, simply because Australian breeders continue to breed the sprinters the market wants.
The continued reduction of distances to attract better fields will only put more pressure on the market to demand sprinters at the expense of stayers.
Obviously from a business viewpoint, it makes sense to get a sprinter because you don't have to wait as long for a return and the opportunities are greater.
For the good of the industry and to protect the diversity of the thoroughbred gene pool in Australia, the industry needs to draw a line in the sand and dictate that from season 2014/15 onwards that there will be more staying races and they will be worth more $.
In Perth for example, the Saturday staying race should be worth an extra 20% compared to its class equivalent sprint. I'd like to see this extended to the provincials as well. If all states did this then breeders would anticipate higher demand for stayers and breed more of them.

Work is keeping me away today. My horse is going around in the first and it would have be good to watch him go around "live". The market and tipsters give him no chance at all.

    Best of luck, Tete.
I like Gondorff for the Cup.
It was the best thing the club did by reducing it to a mile. Have a look at the field size and quality. Two thumbs up to the club.

Excellent post Rodent. I agree that it has attracted a better field since it went to 1600 metres but thats very short term thinking. For christs sake we need to breed decent animals capable of running over at least 2000 metres. I find it sort of silly the way the media wax lyrical and wet themselves when a sprinter runs time.
  • bookies must be cashed up from ysterday - opening markets up already
  • Good start for Punters

    Regal Miss 2.8 into 2.6

Maybe just race 1 but only the aptly named RUN HOME made any ground in that race. Perhaps leaders suited today?
  • I backed Oration for a nice collect - just missed

Star of Diamonds was ok tho 8)

I stand corrected then but I didnt think it was overly disadvantaged - was beaten a long way
