Wally Hannah's Passing.

West Australian Racing
Wally can remember some of his good horses.Barrosa Boy Sanatate Eastern Temple Santa Brae Special Test Sky Filou. no doubt he had alot more decent ones --Being a huge punter he won more on the punt then prizemoney earnt with some of his horses.
Some of his deeds have been mentioned on P.TT. previously. He won three Hannan's Hcp in a row Special Test Santa Brae(2). Horses he took east to win Geelong Cup Santa Brae won at Flemington. Pacer Two Wells. who also landed a plunge.Special test missed out on a run Melb Cup by one horse after his Geelong Cup Victory.
He then ran third in Werribee Cup with seven horses that finished behind him getting a run in the M.C..

Wally may have had a trainers licence early days But he had some good trainers Ian Goddard ---Bob Taylor Ted Hickling
Irky Goddard & Wally. They took a team of horses from Kalgoorlie sure left there mark In V.ic.

When i was reading your post - i kept thinking to myself who was his trainer - because i used to follow the gallops way back then

Then you finally named him Ted Hickling - they were aq great combination those 2

Ted Hickling who i think passed away 15 years ago at a guess - but he was a very astute trainer- i liked the bloke and i liked backing his horses  -

Ian Goddard took Special Test and Santa Brae east for Wally. George James took Two Wells over at the same time for him. They all won. Ian Goddard was a very under rated trainer and in my opinion the best Wally had. He took Special Test to Melbourne after a campaign in Kalgoorlie to win the Geelong cup. Now days you get an automatic start in the Melbourne cup for winning the Geelong cup but not in those days. I think Graham Lambie rode him. You can put in Dixie Taylor and Hickling but Goddard was right up there with them.

Their colours were a mix of purple(or lilac) and white (checker board look). That's when, as a young kid, I observed the greatness of the Hickling/Hannah combination.

Muchea training. What became the stud for SCENIC.
Wally was a dapper dresser.A giant of a figure, with a curly hair. His splendid grey suit made him stand out. Binoculars on one sleeve.

Hickling and Wally could take off a plunge.

I read today that he took over the ASCOT INN in the 60's which received a TAB licence in the early 70's.

A video of BAROSSA BOY is on youtube...search 1992 BATC sprint.

Sky Filou won the GR1 SALINGER for them in 1987(aka Gadsen Rheem Stakes in that year)

The WA horse EVER READY (a real beauty too) ran third to Sky Filou. Rumours  and only rumours suggested Wally had something to do with that horse too...the name was linked to a passion of some kind..I will let others tell. True or false, a good story.

Barossa Boy became the first and only horse to date to win the Doomben winter sprint treble (BTC Sprint, BTC Cup and Doomben 10,000) in the one year when he won all three in 1992.

Jockey that springs to mind for Regimental Honour is John Wilson. Is that your late father?

Summer Beau won 2 fruit & veg's.Wally nearly had a deadheat when the race was known as the Rothwells with Importune winning from Sanatate. Race that has had 8 name changes now the Northerly.
Friend of Wally's mentioned he had one of his biggest wins on the punt when Van Der Hum won M.Cup. Just looking through Round features he also won Coolgardie Cup with horse called Glen born with the Wild Irishman aboard Tommy Graham.

Back in the day - when i was right into the gallops - i was a big Harry White fan - beautifully balanced rider - so i kept a keen eye on his mounts- you know - he was regular in Perth - won that big basically match race on Toy Show - a great filly for TJ  - i think it beat Stormy Rex for Cummings and Higgins - and that would have put Barts nose a bit out of joint - because Harry was Barts no 2 stable rider . And of course Harry tried several times to win the Perth Cup - but couldnt - Arwon won the Melb Cup  but couldnt win the Perth Cup - and i think he ran 2nd behind Rocket Racer on a Colin Alderson trained horse

Now this i reckon is nearly 40 years ago - i reckon bang on 40 maybe 39 - and contrary to a few on the Trots board who suggest otherwise i have got an excellent memory

Ted Hickling took a couple of those top notch gallopers of his -in those famous colours - to Sydney - for a couple of the real big plum races - they didnt win - but Harry White rode them for him

i was in sydney at the time, marko and connect recollect any of teds horses coming over..i remember ngawini, gilt pattern and one george way took over, peter cook won on it. funny story ken callendar told me....peter was on 5k for the win, coming back in he said that'll be 10 george, i spent 5 in the run.

Think the ColinAnderson horse was Puckle Harbour. Don’t know if I have spelled that correctly. Colin Anderson said he would never bring another horse to Perth after they didn’t swab Rocket Racer . If you think Pert racing is a shambles now , what about that not swabbing a cup winner. Wonder who got money out of that one?

Thats it - Puckle Harbour was the horse - i think it might have run 2nd in a Caulfield Cup

Rocket Racer basically put 5 lengths on PH in the space of 100 yards

And i can remember some nice quotes from JJ in the paper - he said Harry came up on my outside - and i basically just gave  him the brush off

As for Falcon - i am very confident that Harry White rode one of Ted Hicklings gallopers - it might have been at Rosehill - because i can even remember the TAB outlet  i was in - on the Frid night when i saw it

And something in my brain is saying the colour yellow - where the sheets on the wall of the TAB for Sydney  yellow - or was the lift out form guide yellow

Yep - and cranking the memory in to top gear - when Harry rode it - i reckon it was a big 1500 metre race at Rosehill -  and to put the cherry on top - i reckon it drew a wide gate as well

Mr Hannah owned Sky's Will. It ran 3rd in the last race at Belmont 6/7/02. That quartet is still my biggest collect ever (and will be very hard to top). I had it for 50c. Paid $183k for $1
