With Tash Faithfull taking the ride, I expect her to be positioned slightly closer from barrier 8. The "Bomb" of the day is Diamond Light. She’s had over a year off, but her recent trials at Belmont have been very sharp, finishing close to some handy types. If she’s fit, she’s significantly better than RTG 46+ level.

Saxon Jewel finds a very winnable race here. Her recent form at Belmont in Class 3 company is far superior to what most of these are producing. She was only beaten 2.2L last start after a tough run, and dropping back to a country RTG46+ is a massive class relief. Superb Vintage won right on the line here last start and must be respected, but the top pick has a significant class edge.

Race 6: Avon Valley Pools Handicap (1500m)

Rivercrest Magic looks set to peak here. She was a massive "eye-catcher" last start at this track, flashing home from well back to grab second. She has a win and a second from three starts at York and loves the 1500m trip. Polyvanova is the obvious danger after a dominant win in the "Rose of York" last start, but she rises in weight and might find it harder to dictate from the jump this time.

Race 7: Western Racepix Handicap (1920m)

We finish the day with a wide-open staying event. Delta Anne is the one for me. She was given every chance last start over 1500m and stayed on well for fourth. She’s screaming for the 1920m now, and her previous form at this distance suggests she has the stamina. Norma Stars is the veteran who just keeps turning up; she was excellent when third here last start and is a proven track and distance performer.

Brian “Buster” O’Malley was many things — a horse trainer, a fearless punter, a supreme judge of a racehorse and, above all, a gentleman of the turf. To those who knew him well, he was simply one of the great characters of Western Australian racing.

Born on 2 July 1934, Buster spent a lifetime around the racetrack. He passed away on 12 March 2026, leaving behind decades of stories that will continue to be told anywhere punters gather — at the races, in the pub, or around a backyard barbecue.

Racing in the Blood

Racing was in Buster’s blood from the beginning.

His father Eric O’Malley was originally a jockey from Townsville in North Queensland. Like many racing men of that era, Eric followed opportunity wherever it appeared. He first moved to Kalgoorlie, riding around the thriving Goldfields racing scene, before eventually settling in Perth.

In time Eric took out a trainer’s licence, and the family made their home in Redcliffe, not far from Ascot Racecourse.

It was there that the moment occurred which would shape Brian O’Malley’s life forever.

The Quid That Started It All

One Saturday lunchtime, an 18-year-old Brian sat at the kitchen table in the family home in Redcliffe staring at the racing page in The West Australian, studying the form.

His mother looked over and said something that would become family legend.

“You won’t make any money sitting around here, Buster.”

She handed him a quid and told him to get out to Ascot and try his luck.

That afternoon he turned £1 into £80.

From that day on he was hooked on the punt for life, and the nickname “Buster” stuck just as firmly.

A Punter First and Always

At heart, Buster was always a punter.

Whether it was two-up or the races, he trusted his judgement. One of his favourite sayings summed up his philosophy perfectly:

“Up the lot three times at even money — that’s seven-to-one.”

He rarely missed a meeting. If there were gallops or trots anywhere he could get to, chances were Buster would be there.

In the 1970s and 1980s, when twenty or thirty bookmakers might stand at a meeting, the words “Buster likes one today” could ripple through the betting ring.

When Buster declared a horse a good thing, bookmakers took notice.

The Early Stable Years

Before his association with businessman Laurie Connell, Buster already had a tidy little training operation at Ascot.

Typically he kept six to ten horses in work, and while Buster was away at the races his father Eric would keep an eye on the stable.

Those were different times in racing. Trainers often placed horses patiently, waiting until they found a race they simply couldn’t lose. When that moment came, the Plunge arrived, and satchels swingers often paid dearly.

The Toodyay Coup

The partnership between Buster and Laurie Connell soon became part of racing folklore.

At one stage Connell had given Buster a couple of horses and simply said:

“Just ring me when they can win.”

Not long after, Buster made the call.

“They’re both in at Toodyay next week — and they’ll win.”

But there was a small complication.

Connell insisted on putting a young apprentice jockey — the son of a friend — on both horses.

Buster pushed back.

“No mate. The two jockeys who’ve been going up to Toodyay riding them in their gallops should get the rides.”

Laurie wouldn’t budge.

“No. The kid rides them.”

Then he added with typical Connell confidence:

“Tell the regular jockeys to sit in the grandstand. I’ll give them the equivalent of my general manager’s monthly wage at Rothwell’s — that should ease their pain.”

Race day came, and both horses won, with the apprentice aboard.

The two regular jockeys sitting in the stand were said to have smiles like dropped watermelons watching the result unfold.

And Laurie Connell — as the story goes — relieved the bookmakers of about a year’s wages for his general manager at Rothwell’s that afternoon.

Betting Like Connell

Connell’s betting methods became legendary.

He often used commissioners to place bets across the bookmaker’s ring. Sometimes they would ring him during a plunge and ask:

“How much are we having on, LR?”

His answer was famously simple:

“Keep betting till they won’t take any more.”

Comedy Lodge and the Stable Family

During those years Buster trained from Connell’s Bedfordale property Comedy Lodge.

Many young horsemen and horsewomen passed through the place and Buster gave plenty of people their start in racing. Quite a few of them remain in the industry today.

Despite the big bets and colourful characters around him, Buster himself remained a quiet and humble man, generous to a fault.

If someone was dusty at the races, Buster might quietly lend them a thousand or two without a second thought.

That was simply the way he was.

The Horses

Over the years Buster trained many fine horses including:

• Phizam
• Concrete
• Rocket Racer
• Fair Sir Winner of WA’s 1^st Million Dollar race

Each had their moments, but none created more talk than Rocket Racer.

The 1987 Perth Cup

In the 1987 Perth Cup, Rocket Racer produced one of the most talked-about performances in Western Australian racing history.

With John “JJ” Miller riding at 48 kilograms, the horse led throughout and won the two-mile race by nine lengths.

It was a scorching day and the horse had clearly given everything.

By the time he returned to the mounting yard he was exhausted, and rumours quickly began circulating.

If you were around WA racing then, you probably heard the story once at a barbecue — or twenty times in a pub.

There were plenty of allegations thrown around afterwards, but the facts remained simple: Rocket Racer raced again a month later in the Queen’s Cup and finished fourth.

The Wedding Day Bet

Like most good racing men, Buster’s life was full of stories.

One of the best involved his daughter’s wedding day.

As the story goes, Buster had a runner in the last race at Ascot that afternoon. But instead of being at the track, he was busy with father-of-the-bride duties.

Before the races he met with two of his closest bookmaker mates and handed one of them $20,000.

His instructions were simple:

“Ninety to twenty at the nine-to-two.”

That was the lot.

The bookmakers knew Buster well enough not to ask too many questions. When he bet like that, he usually had a reason.

While the wedding reception was underway, the horse lined up in the last.

And just like Buster predicted — it won.

By the time word filtered back through the reception, Buster had turned $20,000 into $90,000.

People who were there still laugh and say the same thing:

“It turned out to be a pretty good wedding.”

A Racing Man to the End

For all the plunges, stories and racing folklore, Buster himself never changed.

He remained quiet, humble and generous, a man who loved the game and the people in it.

One of his favourite sayings summed it up perfectly:

“If you’ve got a horse, you’ve always got a chance of getting some money.”

There’s an old newsreel about Phar Lap where someone says the general consensus was simply that he was a good horse.

In much the same way, anyone who knew him would say the same thing about Buster.

The stayers kick us off, and it looks like a tactical battle between the Williams and Pearce camps. ASIF (NZ) is the one that maps perfectly here. He is a model of consistency and rarely misses the frame. He showed great grit when winning over 1600m two starts back and stayed on strongly for second last time out. Rising to 1800m shouldn't be an issue for this Per Incanto gelding. The danger is obviously ROYAL TORONADO, who gets the "Pike Tax" in the market but has the techform rating to back it up. He was spectacular finishing off from the back over 1200m recently and will appreciate the step up in trip.

Race 2 — GLENROY CHAFF HANDICAP (1000m)

A short-course scamper where weight claims are everything. CASTLE ROAD looks exceptionally well-placed here. He’s carrying 58.5kg but Cassey Martinan’s 3kg claim brings him down to a very competitive 55.5kg. He’s a natural leader who was only reeled in late for third last start. Back to 1000m, he can break their hearts. TYCOON HARRY is the class horse but has to lug 58.5kg even after the claim. He’s a 1000m specialist, so don’t expect him to be far away.

• Danger: TYCOON HARRY — Quartered his heel recently but if fit, he’s the benchmark.

Race 3 — MC POLYTRACK HANDICAP (1200m)

This is a No Metro Wins race which usually favors those with a bit of "country grit" coming back to town. LUCKY I AM is a standout based on her lifetime strike rate. She’s placed in 14 of 19 starts—a genuine "banker" for the multiples. She was huge storming home for second at Belmont last time and looks primed for this. SO SI GOD is the wildcard; unbeaten in trial/start scenarios and looks a progressive type for the Casey stable.

• Danger: SO SI GOD — Lightly raced and Chris Parnham sticks. Big watch.

• Roughie (Bomb): MILITARY POWER ($26.00) — If he settles, he has the engine to surprise.

Race 4 — NATASHA STAKES (2200m)

This is the "Pike Show." WONDERFULLY MADE was dominant in the 1000 Guineas and looked like she could have gone around another lap. She is clearly the best filly in this field and the 2200m should be her playground. We won’t be getting rich at the current price, but she’s the anchor for all bets. MASMELO tried hard to catch her last time and will likely be the one chasing her home again.

• Danger: MASMELO — Solid second in the Guineas and the only one likely to stay with the top pick.

Race 5 — CITY OF BELMONT PLATE (1100m)

The two-year-olds are a bit of a lottery, but FIREARM has the benefit of race experience and the Wizard (Pike) in the saddle. He worked home well for third last start and should find this 1100m trip right up his alley. HAPPY DANCE won a trial very impressively and the Parnham stable is hitting its straps with the babies.

SPANK APPEAL is the one here. He is third-up today, which is traditionally the peak performance run for this stable. His effort over 1400m last time was encouraging, and the Maschino progeny love the mile at Ascot. LATER ALLIGATOR is the obvious danger, having gone within a whisker of winning at Pinjarra. He’ll be prominent throughout.

This looks like a match race between two fillies with very different styles. Nistirith is the ultimate professional; she has found the lead and been grabbed late in four of her five career starts. From the inside gate today, Holly Watson will likely hold the rail and dare them to come around her. The +13m rail is her best friend. The danger is Mamma Says So, who has been hitting the line with real intent but may find the leader off and gone if the track is playing to the usual rail-out bias.

My Testimony looks the one here. She’s been consistent without winning, but her tactical speed is the key. From Barrier 1, she should be able to sit "box seat" or lead if required. She put in a gutsy effort last start at Belmont to hold third after being reeled in late; the slightly shorter straight at Ascot compared to Belmont should assist. Win For Buster is the obvious threat, having shown good ability in his first few starts, but the wide-ish gate (Barrier 10) for a horse like Hidden Jewels makes the map tricky for some of the rivals.

While she was a bit disappointing at York last time out, her form prior at Belmont and Ascot was rock solid. Victoria Corver knows her well and from Barrier 6, she’ll be in the first four. Ripper Farooq is the main danger, coming off a flat run but having the ratings to win this if he bounces back to his January form.

This is the "Race of the Day" and where our Best Bet resides. Lucky I Am has an incredible record, placing in 14 of 19 starts. She is arguably a Metro-grade horse competing in a Class 3/4 hybrid. She had no luck last start, rearing at the jump and losing three lengths, only to fly home for second. If she jumps cleanly today from Barrier 3, she wins. Niccimota is the leader and will be the one they have to catch, but Lucky I Am has the superior engine.

We’re heading to the staying trip here. Cheyne Bay fits the profile perfectly. He’s 4th-up, at peak fitness, and has placed in 50% of his lifetime starts. His third at Ascot two starts back over this distance was full of merit. Zephen Johnston-Porter takes the ride and claims 3kg, which is a massive advantage over 1800m. Mistress Of War is the danger; she’s a track specialist who loves this distance, but she’s carrying a bit more weight than our top pick.

Back to this company, and with Chanel Cooper claiming 2kg, he should be able to cross from the wide gate (Barrier 13) and dictate. Defending is the class horse but he’s carrying 59.5kg and has a habit of finding one better lately.

He should lead or sit outside the leader and simply outclass them. Reign In The Cash is the logical saver; he was good when second last start and will be the one coming at the favorite late.

While "Prancer" is flying, Zadows is better weighted after the class adjustment and has a superior peak rating.

Favaios is the danger; he’s consistent and has a good record at the track, but he may find himself in a speed battle early.
