Just the one bet each way - and like Macciateau no more after today - it's race 2 number 7 Gondrinken - his form can fast go from ordinary to a quite a good run, that's a little indicated by the two tipsters on TABtouch one has him as on top selection and the other can't find a place in his top 4 in a field of 7.

That's Gondrinken for you - last run in town mid week probably should have run a place when impeded for a run half way up the straight was close to 100/1 though and only around 5/1 today.

Last chance pay 1, 2 only - each way.

Race 1: TABtouch Punters Club Now On Sale Handicap(1000m)

A field of three-year-old sprinters gets the day startedunder handicap conditions. Long Service Leaf is a highly progressivegelding from the Neville Parnham yard , ridden by Chris Parnham. He arrivespeak-fit and full of confidence after fighting off rivals to secure a narrowbut gritty victory over this track and distance in CL5 company last start.Boasting an outstanding career placement consistency , he possesses a tacticaladvantage from barrier 6. While shefaded to tenth first-up after a wide trip , she was incredibly sharp whenholding on for second at Ascot prior to that. She drops significantly in gradehere, gets the benefit of apprentice Natika Riordan claiming down her weight ,and has historically placed consistently across her career starts. She willprove incredibly tough to catch. Overdrive is the clear threat; she putin a massive performance to finish second over this track and distance laststart , and Chris Parnham will ensure she is flying late from the widest gate.

Recommended Bet: High (2 Units) — Magnique ($3.78)

Selection Matrix

Selection

Danger

Comment

Magnique

Overdrive

Class drop and a substantial weight relief give her the tactical edge to dictate from the front.

Framed Betting Market (105% Total)

1.
The first time at around 20/1 in the CB Cox Stakes Hoba West in a daring front running ride by Sean O'Donnell dashes for home at the top of the straight and there's nothing coming out of the chasing pack until eventual Perth Cup winner Apulia sweeps down the middle of the track from last and with Willy Pike winding the favourite up nails Hoba West near the winning post.

Then yesterday with Austin Galati aboard and another heady front running ride at double the odds of 40/1 is in front right to the winning post and it's that Pike once again this time on Western Empire who delivers déjà vu for favourite backers.

Hoba West was only second up since runner up in that Cox Stakes - just goes to show Summer Dickson one hell of an astute trainer. So close but so far.

Hoof notes.
Just near the line thought Western Empire was going to get up, but right on the line initially perhaps Hoba West may have got the bob in or a dead heat.

Also the win of the favourite was the last and 7th favourite number to be successful and grant the one lucky winner a cool $230,000 when your lucks in its in.

With no Thursday or Friday meeting straight into Saturdays Hyperion Stakes day early.

Doing a couple of plays on the 9 event card - in the big race only stating the obvious Western Empire and Rope Them In and daylight the rest, amazing though how often looks that way on paper but doesn't always eventuate in saying that I'll be taking those 2 in first four betting to run either 1, 2 or 1, 3 the other 2 placings much harder to select it's almost a field field selection in the other 2 spots, and if get those other 2 in then hope for something a bit rough in the other two placings and they'll need to be to get a reasonable dividend.

Have been a Rope Them In admirer has run some slashing races pelting home to win and been unlucky too, last start when Paul Harvey angled out to dash away a comfortable 2 or 3 lengths in front thought at the good odds of 8/1 they won't be getting anywhere near him today, just goes to show what a gutsy and quality horse Western Empire is, a marvel at 8 years of age - runner up in last years Railway Stakes and if see a replay of the Northerly 2 weeks later was well and truly beaten about 150 metres out and somehow still held 3rd on the line.

They look head and shoulders above the rest but of course stranger things have happened, and with possibly more rain on the way you never know.

One other bet on the card - and it's his final chance ever ever ever - each way a roughy race 8 # 9 Macciateau always gets me in except 2 runs ago when initially thought be a big chance in a 2100 metre race and will be between 7/1 and 10/1 in a small field so when opened up favourite and ran at 2/1 had to pass at those odds ran a very average 4th, however last start back in distance was a better effort running on well with not much luck so will give him one final go.

Top hoop Clint Johnston Porter to ride again, thought his ride could've been a little bit better last time but he's one of the best going around, and ridden more winners than me ( zero ).

Good luck everyone.

I was looking at the ridiculously slow times for Rockingham supposedly run on a Good 4 track. Race 1, supposedly 1400m was run in 1:31.20 last 600m in 39.08. WTF? That's just not possible. It was a fast run race yet the time was so slow there has to be an issue.

Imagine my surprise when I had a look at a 1450m trial won by First Encounter on the 20th April in 1:31.52 and compared it to the 1400m race. On race day the rail was out 3m. It turns out, the horses in the race won by Super Saiyan had been running for approximately 5.5 seconds before they got to where the gates were positioned for the 1450m trial. WTF! That means the so called 1400m race was probably around 1500m. That is outrageous.

The other 1400m race was won by Sunbronzed in 1:31.11 coming home in 37.05. The 1500m track record at Rosehill held by Shindig is 1:27.21

So Shindig gives them 100m head start and still wins by 24 lengths =))

Thoroughbred stewards’ inquiry – Trainer Mr Glen Cortes
Racing WA Stewards have concluded an inquiry into reports from Racing WA Senior Steward Mr
G Bush and Racing Industry Veterinarian Dr K Kiely regarding the condition of horses under the
care of licensed trainer Mr Glen Cortes. The inquiry also examined the circumstances
surrounding the death of the mare WHAITIRI.
After hearing evidence from Trainer Mr G Cortes and Dr K Kiely at the inquiry conducted on
Thursday 7 May 2026, Mr Cortes pleaded guilty to the following charges:
Charge 1. Thoroughbred Rule of Racing AR 299 – Death of named horse
Particulars: That Mr Cortes, Trainer of WHAITIRI breached AR 299 by failing to notify Racing
Australia of the death of that mare within 24 hours.
Charge 2. Thoroughbred Rule of Racing AR 296 – Named horse change of location
Particulars: That Mr Cortes breached AR 296(2)(d)(ii) by failing to lodge an amendment to a
stable return when the following horses left his stable:
THIS IS AMERICA, AUGUSTA RED, HEARTS AND MINDS, NORTHEAST EAGLE, MYSTERY
MAN, MINSTINGUETTE, JUPITER SUN, QUIRINDI, SONIC DASH and THE FULL QUID
Charge 3: Thoroughbred Rule of Racing AR 231 – Care and welfare of horses
Particulars: That Mr Cortes breached AR 231(1)(b)(i)(B) as the trainer of SIRVEKE and person
in charge of that gelding, failed to exercise reasonable care to stop the condition of that gelding
declining to an unacceptable level.
Charge 4: Thoroughbred Rule of Racing AR 231 – Care and welfare of horses
Particulars: That Mr Cortes breached AR 231(1)(b)(i)(B) as the trainer of THE SLAP and person
in charge of that gelding, failed to exercise reasonable care to stop the condition of that gelding
declining to an unacceptable level.
After adjourning to consider the matter and receive further evidence from Mr Cortes on the
question of penalty, the panel reconvened. Mr Cortes was notified today that the panel
determined to impose the following penalties:
Charge 1: $500 fine
Charge 2: 3 month disqualification
Charge 3: 6 month disqualification
Charge 4: 6 month disqualification

Racing WA Stewards directed that the disqualifications under charges 2, 3 and 4 be served
concurrently. The total disqualification period is therefore 6 months, effective immediately.
When determining penalty, Racing WA Stewards considered, among other things:
• Mr Cortes’ plea of guilty and personal circumstances;
• Mr Cortes’ record in relation to the relevant rules as well as his length and level of
involvement in the industry;
• With respect to charge 1:
o The importance of timely reporting of the death of a horse to ensure accurate
records and the ability to properly investigate such matters.
o That the death of the mare resulted from a stable accident and was not linked to
charges 3 and 4.
• With respect to charge 2, the panel considered the seriousness of the matter concerning
equine traceability and the importance of complying with those rules. This ensures a
horse’s whereabouts are known after departing a stable, and that the horse continues to
receive appropriate care.
• With respect to charge 3 & 4:
o The panel noted the seriousness of the matter and the need for deterrence. This
is to reinforce and maintain the high standards of animal welfare that apply within
the industry.
o Previous penalties issued in relation to the care and welfare of horses.
o Following the Stewards’ investigation, Mr Cortes improved the condition of these
horses back to an acceptable level.

Just read an interesting post from a guy on another forum and worth a read.

In the mid 1960s the Tab totaliser pool was given the green light. Their was only around a dozen meetings a week to bet on and takeout rates were around 12% and with a lack of computerisation the staffing to accept and process bets was very labour intensive. Racing participants all argued it was tough to make a living.

40 years roll on by and we betting on 100's of races from all 3 codes 24/7 and as the tote becomes more computerised staffing levels are much lower on a pro - rata comparison and legislation was made that the average tote takeout across all bet types could be no more than 16%.

By this stage the tote was moving from Govt operation to privatisation - was stated at the time to be the saviour of the industry. However many racing participants argued it didn't work and that it was still tough to make a living.

So as come closer to the present and the cap of 16% is still not enough - more money is needed and the average take rises quickly to over 20%. We also have race fields legislation getting the corporates to pay a bit more.

So here we are now today with world pools and co mingling increasing the rake even more.

He ends his comment with a reasonable question - With all the punting that goes on these days racing and sport 24/7 via digital platforms why should punters be paying almost double the rake than they were paying 60 years ago ?

Tend to agree with him - and that argument of "stability of pools" cough cough and other hocus pocus talk - on the whole there's only one thing that affects dividends and that's take out rate. Not forgetting too - the "rort" of rounding down dividends on most pools to the nearest 10 cents.

Are world pools, co mingling and a national tote pool the answer ? I'm not so sure.

Race 1: LESLEY CHENERY MAIDEN (1000m)

The season opener features a field of maidens trying to find their footing on the Carnarvon sand. The top pick here is Costa Star, who brings excellent recent form from Geraldton where she hit the line with real purpose to finish second and third at her last two outings. She has a solid cruising speed, handles competitive racing well, and maps beautifully to sit right behind the leaders before launching her claim. The clear and immediate danger is Dark Opal. She possesses a strong provincial foundation with placings at Ascot and Bunbury last preparation, and her recent trial victory at Lark Hill suggests she has returned in outstanding order. She will look to make this a true test from the start.

Race 1 Framed Market (105%)

Costa Star: $2.80

Dark Opal: $3.80

All King's: $5.50

Dashing Diva: $12.00

Hell's Citi: $26.00

Fighting Thunder: $34.00

Field / Others: $10.50

Selection

Danger

Comment

Costa Star ($2.80)

Rock-hard fit with excellent recent placings at Geraldton; maps perfectly.

Dark Opal ($3.80)

Classy provincial performer who won a recent trial; the primary threat.

Recommended Bet: Medium (1.5 Units) on Costa Star ($2.80)

Race 2: LEON BAKER JEWELLERY HANDICAP (1000m)

This is a cracking sprint where track specialization becomes our primary betting angle. The Coolakin King is an absolute king of this course, boasting a formidable record of four wins from ten starts on the Carnarvon dirt. He is a natural on-speed runner who loves to dictate terms from the front. While he has been assigned a hefty 61.5kg weight, the booking of apprentice Rocky Cheung brings a valuable 1.5kg weight claim, dropping his carried weight to a far more manageable 60.0kg. Fresh and back on his favorite surface, he is poised to lead them a merry chase. The main danger is Catalpa, a high-quality gelding dropping significantly in grade from competitive RTG70+ fields at Geraldton and Albany. He has a massive class advantage but must prove he can adapt to the unique dirt surface over a distance that stretches his minimal limits.

Race 2 Framed Market (105%)

The Coolakin King: $2.50

Catalpa: $4.00

Our Kiwi Princess: $6.00

On The Full: $10.00

Mars Mission: $15.00

Field / Others: $15.00

Selection

Danger

Comment

The Coolakin King ($2.50)

Track specialist with 4 course wins; excellent speed mapping with a 1.5kg claim.

Catalpa ($4.00)

Serious class dropper from RTG70+ company; major threat if he handles the dirt.

Recommended Bet: High (2 Units) on The Coolakin King ($2.50)

Race 3: SEA HARVEST FISHING COMPANY HANDICAP (1000m)

This race gives us our standout wager of the entire card. Gold Spy is a sensational horse-for-course at Carnarvon, having won three of his four lifetime starts on this track. He possesses an explosive turn of foot when fresh and has a proven history of winning first-up. From the comfortable draw, he can settle handy to the speed and let down strongly on the home turn. Soaring Solo looms as the key danger and saver option. She is blistering out of the gates and will seek to lead at all costs. Carrying an assigned 59.5kg, apprentice Jefferson Tsang's 2kg claim pulls her back to a sleek 57.5kg, which makes her incredibly dangerous second-up on a track where she has rarely missed a place.

Race 3 Framed Market (105%)

Gold Spy: $2.80

Soaring Solo: $3.50

Devils I: $5.50

Stryker's Gal: $10.00

Shooting Kontiki: $16.00

Field / Others: $16.00

Selection

Danger

Comment

Gold Spy ($2.80)

Dynamic course specialist (3 wins from 4 starts here); primed to win fresh.

Soaring Solo ($3.50)

Highly tactical leader stripping fitter second-up; nicely weighted after the 2kg claim.

Recommended Bet: Best Bet (3 Units) on Gold Spy ($2.80)

Race 1: BISLEY WORKWEAR PLATE (1200m)

BARRON BILL stands out as the ultimate benchmark of consistency in this small juvenile opening sprint. He comes into this third-up assignment on the back of consecutive runner-up performances at Ascot where he handles high pressure seamlessly. His natural tactical speed allows him to land right in the first half of the field, eliminating traffic risks. Last start he pulled up with a mouth laceration and still managed to fight on tenaciously for second, which shows genuine grit. The obvious threat is VINNY NAY, who drops drastically in grade after an acceptable midfield finish in the Group 3 WA Sires' Produce Stakes. That massive class shift makes him the mandatory saver for the race.

Recommended Bet: Bet (1 Unit) - BARRON BILL at $3.20 (TABtouch)

Horse

Role

Brief Comment

BARRON BILL

Selection

Highly consistent on-speed type who looks perfectly placed third-up.

VINNY NAY

Danger

Massive class dropper from Group 3 level who must be respected.

Framed Market (105%)

BARRON BILL: $3.33

VINNY NAY: $3.57

SWIFT RULER: $5.00

IZA BAY: $8.33

MANHATTAN RHYTHM: $12.50

BRAVE MOVE: $20.00

HEZA HELLRAISER: $100.00

RADAR LOVE: $100.00

Race 2: FREE ENTRY TO BELMONT PARK HANDICAP (2200m)

ANTIQUE STAR enjoys a distinct class advantage stepping down from the highly competitive Saturday RTG 72+ bracket into an open RTG 66+ handicap. She is an exceptionally honest mare who regularly finishes in the money and thrives when using her on-speed running style to control from the front half of the field. Crucially, the booking of an apprentice claims a necessary 3kg off her back, meaning she carries a very friendly 57kg despite her superior baseline rating. Her primary danger is ROCK IN WONDER, who fought on with great tenacity to stick for second last start over this distance after leading the field at Ascot. He will keep our top selection honest all the way down the straight.

Recommended Bet: High (2 Units) - ANTIQUE STAR at $2.35 (TABtouch)

Horse

Role

Brief Comment

ANTIQUE STAR

Selection

Clear class drop, perfect forward map, and a critical 3kg claim to seal it.

ROCK IN WONDER

Danger

On-speed model of consistency who will look to control the tempo.

Framed Market (105%)

ANTIQUE STAR: $2.38

ROCK IN WONDER: $4.55

SAVORSKI: $7.14

ARGYLE STAR: $10.00

ROYAL TROOPER: $12.50

DUCHEES DEMERIT: $20.00

DARK LOOKS: $33.33

SHAMISTER: $100.00

Race 3: TABTOUCH - WESTSPEED PLATINUM SERIES HEAT 1 (1200m)

ACORN is a highly reliable short-course specialist who profiles beautifully for this heat. His recent form is top-notch, highlighted by a narrow runner-up performance where he missed out by the barest of margins over 1100m at Ascot. He shows superb gate speed to sit right on the pace, handles regular work with ease, and gets the services of William Pike which typically points to a very tactical ride. The threat is NONESOSPICY, a sharp mare who loves to lead the field and gets a 2kg claim to offset her top weight, making her the logical choice to match motors with us early.

Recommended Bet: High (2 Units) - ACORN at $2.60 (TABtouch)

Horse

Role

Brief Comment

ACORN

Selection

Just missed by a nose last start and gets the ultimate pilot in Pike.

NONESOSPICY

Danger

Dynamic speedster who will lead for a long way with a 2kg claim.

Framed Market (105%)

ACORN: $2.63

NONESOSPICY: $4.00

MT SHIRATAKU: $4.55

GO GO GROMMET: $11.11

CAPORETTO: $16.67

FLAGSHIP: $33.33

MY LOVELY PET: $100.00

GET OUT MICK: $100.00

Race 4: THE LAWN PRIDE AUSTRALIA HANDICAP (1000m)

ELITE BEAU hits this race fresh and possesses a flawless first-up record, being completely undefeated when starting a brand new campaign. His recent trial triumph at Lark Hill was a sharp piece of work that confirmed his readiness, and having William Pike booked for the return tells you everything you need to know about the stable's expectations. He will get a lovely tracking run behind a solid tempo. HEZANGELIC is the obvious main threat; he is currently in career-best form chasing a hat-trick of victories after consecutive on-speed wins, though he must concede significant weight to our top pick.

Recommended Bet: High (2 Units) - ELITE BEAU at $2.35 (TABtouch)

Horse

Role

Brief Comment

ELITE BEAU

Selection

Undefeated fresh, dominant trial win, and gets Pike from a soft draw.

HEZANGELIC

Danger

Chasing a hat-trick and possesses elite speed but carries more weight.

Framed Market (105%)

ELITE BEAU: $2.50

HEZANGELIC: $5.10

MAGNIQUE: $9.20

NICCIMOTA: $9.20

XENTARO: $9.20

CLEANEMUP: $16.80

SCREAM: $33.70

MAIN ACT: $50.50

BONNIE LAD: $101.00

JELLY CAN RUN: $101.00
