Aiden O'Brien the Lance Armstrong of Irish Racing?

The Black Horse Issue 3 Page 3 - Questions For the O'Briens

1. There have been many rumours circulating for months about you, Joseph and Donnacha, including that your horses tested positive for prohibited drugs but Denis Egan, IHRB
chief executive, prevented an investigation taking place. A legal source also told me an
injunction was granted in the High Court preventing the media reporting a doping story
you were involved in, but that has since disappeared into the ether. Why did you wait until
two days after Egan stepped down as chief executive of the IHRB before raising issues
about drugs you suddenly see as important? There is no smoke without fire; couldn’t you
have done more to protect the reputation of Irish racing before?

2. Mendelssohn, who you trained, won the UAE Derby by a scarcely believable 18 lengths
in 2018 and never won another race. Considering Dubai’s contempt for international law
and human rights, isn’t it also reasonable to have doubts about its record on anti-doping
in their biggest races? Do you think Mendelssohn could have been doped?

3. How do you explain the remarkable transformation of Snowfall, who only won a maiden
in seven runs as a two year old in 2020, into a Classic winner who won the Epsom Oaks
by a scarcely believable 16 lengths the following year? Besides her maiden win at the
Curragh at the end of June 2020, she was beaten a total of 51 lengths on the six other
occasions she ran that year. After a break of 215 days, she came back a different horse,
winning her first start as a three year old, a Group 3 at York, before annihilating the opposition in the Epsom Oaks on 4 June 2021. Was her initial transformation and then steep
decline in form later in the year indicative of the use of performance enhancing drugs?

4. Order Of Australia was last of nine runners in a Group 3 at the Curragh on 11 October
2020, beaten 47 lengths. Three weeks later he won the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland
as an outsider at odds of 80-1, the only time he’s won at Group 1 level, when injected four
hours before the race with Lasix, an anti-bleeding medication that is also a diuretic which
can mask the use of performance enhancing drugs like EPO. He returned to America to
run at the same track on 9 October 2021, coming last of nine runners as favourite. This
time he wasn’t injected with Lasix, which is now mostly prohibited in US racing. The horse
was administered this drug in 2020 for the only time and for no legitimate medical reason, as he is not a “bleeder”; it was administered to artificially improve his performance,
which is what happened according to all available form figures. Do you consider Order Of
Australia to be an imposter, a Group 1 winner only in name and a potential stallion who
could damage the breed because of doping? While the injection you gave the horse in
2020 was permitted, it was also voluntary. Shouldn’t you set a much better example regarding performance enhancing drugs or is winning at all costs your only motive?

5. Joseph reached 100 domestic winners in a season in Ireland on 9 October 2021. Apart
from you reaching this milestone, no other trainer has achieved this since Jim Bolger and
Dermot Weld in 1994. Joseph also has 50 winners already posted in the new jump racing
season. I have received solid intelligence that alleges Joseph is using performance enhancing drugs. In 2020 IHRB vets made an unannounced visit to his training yard to test
four horses for prohibited drugs, but they were unable to complete their task because the
horses weren’t there, they had been moved to a satellite yard owned by someone else and
the IHRB at that time only had jurisdiction to test horses on a trainer’s premises. This was
4 THE BLACK HORSE NEWSLETTER
4 November 2021
supposed to be an unannounced surprise visit but Joseph had been tipped off, almost
certainly by one of three IHRB senior managers, including Denis Egan. You revealed in
the Racing Post your horses were tested by the IHRB and the Department of Agriculture a
few weeks ago, after Egan had left the regulator. Was this an unannounced inspection or
by appointment and will you supply a complete list of all the horses tested? Do you think,
in the interests of transparency and integrity, your horses should have been tested at the
start of the season as well as at the end now 12 months after Jim Bolger first said doping
is the number one problem in Irish racing and the playing field isn’t level? What is your
response to the common accusation that you and your sons are protected by the IHRB?

In
the last 42 years no Australian trained runners have died in
this most famous of races, but 11 international horses have
lost their lives in the last ten years either in the race, or later
from injuries caused during it, or as a result of injuries suffered at Werribee International Horse Centre, where the
imported horses trained while waiting to clear quarantine
after their arrival in the country.
With the Melbourne Spring Carnival being a truly international sporting occasion, it is an extraordinary statistic
that four of the horses who have died there in the last few
years and another two who sustained serious injury came
from Aidan O’Brien’s Ballydoyle Racing Stable.

The Blackhorse Newsletter Reports......

The Galileo filly Rhododendron, trained by Aidan O’Brien, bled as a three year old
during the Prix de Diane in France in 2017. O’Brien said:
“It was the worst you’ve ever seen. She sprayed blood everywhere.
We put it down to a very hot day and she’s never done it before or
since but they very rarely come back from something like that.”
Rhododendron did come back, eventually completing her rehabilitation by winning
the Group 1 Prix de l’Opera at Chantilly and adding a second Group 1 when winning
the Lockinge Stakes the following year, but her form tailed off markedly and she
was retired.
Mated with Japan’s multiple champion stallion, Deep Impact, her first foal is
Auguste Rodin, a dual Derby winner in 2023. Coolmore has never publicly discussed
how they got Rhododendron back to the track after she bled but the usual
treatment is with furosemides, which are diuretics that reduce blood pressure but
are banned on race day in most jurisdictions around the world for their ability to
improve performance and mask the presence of other prohibited drugs.
7 July 2023
THE BLACK HORSE NEWSLETTER 7
What is interesting about Auguste Rodin is that although he has won the Epsom
and Irish Derbies on his best days he has also run two shocking races (English 2000
Guineas and King George) when it appears he pulled himself up and was tailed off
miles behind. Could he have bled like his mother Rhododendron?
Aidan O’Brien said for some reason the horse’s “power disappeared” in the King
George. The recurring theme of the 160 horses who have bled in UK racing in the
first half of this year is that they lost power and stopped running, which
unsurprisingly happens when the lungs are filling with blood. Some could race
respectably again a few weeks later and not bleed visibly.
As ever in racing somebody somewhere will always come up with another wonder
drug that can sort a problem out, but it’s usually illegal and will enhance
performance.

The best carnival around kicks off Saturday,

Yet to study the card and most markets aren't even up yet.
Two things to note early doors, Riff Rocket at 2.10 looks unders, Sunsets who beat him fair and square really at 13/3.50 I'd prefer at this stage.

Secondly I'm not so sure there isn't a bit of angst with Zahra and team Maher/Eustace as he isn't riding for them this weekend from what I noticed(for example no way he jumps off Brave Mead by choice)and they have bloody Jamie Spencer on instead!
And Carleen got the punt off of United Nations for him too .. booooo to that!

So who has some tips for the card on Saturday c'mon it's a great day let's hope it's a winning one.

Not necessarily my favourite track but i love this race and its a very good edition this year.

Many are now on Romantic Warrior almost chips in and at his best I understand this opinion, trackwork reports are he has been going great and has improved significantly post the Turnbull(where he was beaten 4l but ok).May well start pretty short it seems.

Who do we like?
I think Militarize can run a race, can Zac Lloyd the boom apprentice stamp his rep and win the big one, yes i believe it's quite possible.Lloyd has been finding some strife lately in races maybe even getting targetted by his cohorts and overall its fair to say he has been a bit out of sorts whilst getting plenty of top rides.
Up to him now given the big and justified boom the kid has, must continue to improve and rise above the ups and downs no better time to do this than Saturday. It is a MUST to stay one off the fence from the low gate, or could they roll forward? not his racing style and though 49.5 can sometimes see tactics change, i don't think they will go down that road.

Fangirl is in hot form and smoked Mr B do both get a strong 2040m? I see Hayes Inc. have thrown in the hard track card, want the sting out or a good 4 at worst.Track will be a little choppy by then that's for sure but they believe low draw and a track that has more give usually will suit.

Hope Gold Trip runs a cracker but not sure about him after the Caulfield cup? stable reports are he is 100% sweet so it wouldn't surprise if he won and it would be an amazing effort.Might get an ok price too with the heavy support for RW.
Maher has stated he will need everything to go right and i agree back in distance, i actually like him for the big one even with 58.5.Undoubtedly will run well this weekend.

Should be a great race and some good bets present on the undercard I reckon(some are fairly short), hopefully we get a bank for the big one.
Two worthy of mention, R2 Blue Stratum if it gets a run.(watch his jump out, very impressive)
R6 Skybird if their running on she is very smart and that is not a strong group 2 race at all.Micth "Attrition fame" Freedman trains her.

Idk ..

Perths own Amelia's Jewel with an anticipated impost of 55.5 looks super appealing in the Toorak Hcp.Huetor will be topweight, Pinstriped looks a strong opponent and interested to see how Antino measures up, he is a winner not sure of his rating so dont know what weight he will get.

Everest field is lacking a gun or two but there are some ripping sprinters in it.The likely 12 are :

*Private Eye
*I wish I Win
Mazu
Overpass
*Think About It - beast
*Buenos Noches - rate him highly, is a knockout chance
Hawaii 5 0
Alcohol Free
Espiona
In Secret
Cylinder
Shinzo

Who wins? *denotes my top 4 selections, includes a couple of back markers who will be steaming home trying to run over the top of Think About It.

Many other great support races in both states, what a great day of racing it will be.

Quiet day in Mexico due to the grand final(torn who I'd like to see win that match but maybe the Lions in a small upset)but Sydney has the time honoured Epsom.
This made me reminisce about a handy one 30 odd years ago winning 2 plus 2 Doncasters in 90/91, oh yes baby Super Impose.I loved this horse as much arguably as girlfriends of the time :D

Anyway I digress, also at Randwick sees the return of the excitement(and winning)machine Think About It.
He should be fairly wound up with the big target only a fortnight away..who beats him idk if any can.

I usually bang on too much(and already have here to be fair)but I'll try and keep it a bit shorter from now..haha.

R2 Jmac is back! Waterhouse & Bott have 4 runners in the early 2yo feature and he has scored the best of them Lady Camelot, only query is probably overcoming the stablemates to lead but looks smart and trialled super ..

R4 Throwing out a roughie who has his fair share of ability probably won't want a track too hard, Stroke Of Luck.

R5 Tom Kitten who is much better drawn, rocks up at Randwick up in trip to a mile all big ticks = get on.

R6 Have followed Tropical Squall(a Prized Icon youngster)closely this prep and G1 company is a step up again but PI won one at his 4th or 5th start i think. She is a sneaky chance though leading could be a query, i would love to see them take a sit(probably unlikely).Another at value who will improve drawn much better is Tutta La Vita for the lethal Waller/Moreira combo.

To the Epsom.

Already mentioned the combo once, Kovalica for Jo and Chrisso :P I know Waller is a big fan of this galloper and this race and field suits bigtime 2nd up.
Second tip is Nugget, he ran 3rd from gate 19 in the Donny and there is less quality here.. ohh and the GOAT has the keys.
Lastly and he has to get a mention the topweight Oberon.Needs a little luck too from a wide gate but ran 2nd in the Donny this year why its $23 has me stumped!!
Annabel usually gets these imports to run well and bob up at juicy odds too, he is a live chance with luck in running.

Just Fine is crazy short in the Metrop, maybe will justify that price and win with the featherweight but just as likely something at double figure odds wins it.I have little idea of whom that might be though.

Finally, one or two for Mornington.

In the feature Waller should win it with Born A King there is no spoils on the price though.Wouldn't be a huge shock if Regal Power went much better but at $5 I'm passing, if he got out to double figures(maybe with a boost)he could be worth a bet.

Earlier one at odds who might figure and I don't mind finally stepping up in trip is In R5, Aseventy Seven.
Though he is a spec only i am a knock on the fav, while this class suits the dry/hard ground may not i think she prefers some give in the track.

Spring racing is gearing up and i'm excited.

Caulfield.

Grab some free punting money on Red Card R3.

Then there's Amenable who was enormous in the Memsie, looks very hard to go past.I don't think gate 9 will be much of a problem just means we get a better price.

R7 sees Steparty and Veight clash, now I love(and own)a 6 litre stonking V8 :D but Steparty looks bombproof so far and a ripper of a clash ensues, i prefer the fav but would save on the Mcevoy galloper.

R8 Is Regal Power too big a price here($26)?, Alaskan God also looks appealing after the eye catcher last start. One of the top cup hopes and close to my main fancy at this stage in Goldman has his second prep run here but has drawn the carpark.

The group 1 feature should be great to watch, Alligator Blood backing up within 7 days and he won the race last year, bloody good horse but I've always had a slight question mark on him.The galloper I'm most Interested in is Without A Fight, he is my Caulfield Cup horse and a smokey Cox plate chance. He has a serious turn of foot for a mile and a half plus galloper.
It is not the greatest field ever assembled Alaskan God is first emergency I see, I think they should run in the previous race but maybe they have a crack in top company.
Great days racing there.

Rosehill.

A watch on Waterhouse and Bott pretty much all day basically and also on Joao Moreira, the Australian monkey of years past is well and truly off his back and he tuned up with a double on Wednesday(one was for the aforementioned stable).

Espiona very hard to beat in R7 honourable mention to Sheeza Belter having her first run for Annable Neasham..tough task facing this fav first up though.

The Sydney feature, I like Cylinder as a horse is a real winner and horses like Shinzo, King Colorado etc all have good chances but the one I like a lot is Militarize. The inside gate may not be ideal so its over to you Joao(who is 2 rides for 2 group 1s on this beauty)to weave your magic.

A Cracking day awaits, may it be a winning one.

MELBOURNE Cup-winning trainer Darren Weir has been hit with fresh racing charges relating to his use of a jigger on three horses on the eve of the 2018 Melbourne Cup carnival.

DAMIEN RACTLIFFE reports for FAIRFAX MEDIA that Weir, trainer Jarrod McLean and stablehand Tyson Kermond were hit with 10 charges each from Racing Victoria stewards on Thursday relating to the use of an electronic apparatus on Yogi, Red Cardinal and Tosen Basil while they ran on a treadmill at Weir’s Warrnambool stables on October 30, 2018.

The trio were caught on video using the jigger, with the 15-minute clip used by police in court last year to assist in their animal cruelty case against the three men.

They were found guilty of animal cruelty in the Magistrates Court in December last year, but avoided a conviction. The footage was then made available to Racing Victoria stewards who opened a fresh investigation into the trio.

In February 2019, Weir was disqualified for four years for the possession of jiggers after they were found in his bedroom in a police raid.

Despite being eligible to reapply for his racing licence since February this year, he has been inactive, awaiting the findings of the stewards’ reactivated investigation.

On Thursday, stewards handed down 10 charges against each of the men – four charges for corrupt conduct and six charges for animal cruelty.

“The charges relate to the stewards’ inquiry into the conduct of Mr Weir, Mr McLean and Mr Kermond which was reactivated after further evidence was presented in the Magistrates’ Court on 14 December 2022 in the course of criminal proceedings against the three individuals,” the stewards’ statement said.

“Since December, the stewards have conducted a comprehensive investigation involving interviews with multiple persons and analysis of a substantial volume of materials.”

In detailing the corrupt conduct charges, stewards said: “Mr Weir was at all relevant times the licensed trainer of Red Cardinal, Tosen Basil and Yogi.

“On or about 30 October 2018, on each horse Mr Weir used an electric or electronic apparatus capable of affecting their performance in a race.

“Mr Weir applied the apparatus to Red Cardinal, Tosen Basil and Yogi with the intention of affecting their performance, and thereby affecting their results in future races.”

Kermond responded to the development, saying: “If the mental stress of the last five years wasn’t enough they want to take it further. I haven’t worked in racing for five years and have been a stock agent.”

Weir and McLean were also contacted for comment.

Weir – who has a desire to return to racing – is accused of using the jigger seven times on Red Cardinal, and nine times each on Yogi and Tosen Basil.

McLean and Kermond were also charged with corrupt conduct and for abetting Weir.

The trio will face the Victorian Racing Tribunal at a date to be fixed.

Weir is currently pre-training horses, but would be banned from working with horses if disqualified from racing a second time.

A host of Weir’s former clients told this masthead last November that they would be prepared to support Weir if he was granted another licence.

But stewards made it clear after the court case was finalised in December that they would renew their investigation.

“The original penalties related to the possession charges and that matter proceeded on the evidence that was available at that time,” Jamie Stier, Racing Victoria’s executive general manager of integrity services, said in December last year.

“Following yesterday’s open court hearing, there’s been further evidence come to light.

“In October 2019, the stewards actually opened an inquiry into the criminal charges laid by the police, so that inquiry has been sitting there open. The stewards have reactivated their inquiry now, and they will now consider any evidence that becomes available to them.”
