Today signifies the start of a new era for the famous South Australian thoroughbred nursery Lindsay Park Stud. Co-owners Sam Hayes and Darren Thomas have today announced that the business will be re-named Cornerstone Stud.

The move to re-brand the stud comes about almost three years after Sam Hayes and Darren Thomas purchased the stud business from David Hayes in July 2008.

?There is a great deal of history and esteem attached to the Lindsay Park name, but equally there was always an element of misunderstanding within the industry. The new name will help to generate some clarity around our business and the services we provide for our clients,? Hayes explained.

The re-naming of the business follows the announcement that Champion stallion Hussonet is being relocated to the Barossa Valley in what has been regarded as a massive boost for the breeding industry in Southern Australia.

?The vision we have for Cornerstone is to continue building on the quality of our stallion roster and the quality of our broodmare band, in association with our clients. It is a team effort. Building long term partnerships with leading thoroughbred breeders both locally and internationally is central to our plan.?

?We wanted a name that was strong and grounded. When you breed racehorses you are at the start of something and we feel the same way about our business today. In order to be successful you need to start with a solid foundation and Cornerstone reflects that ethos.? Hayes explained.

The partners behind Conerstone Stud bring with them a strong set of complementary skills. Darren Thomas? business acumen has been honed running T&R Pastoral, Australia?s largest family owned lamb and mutton processing company.

?Darren and I share a passion for breeding racehorses and we share a vision for where we want to take the business. We are looking forward to building our own legacy based on the same underlying values of passion, persistence, vision and integrity,? Hayes explained.

Cornerstone Stud will be represented at the Inglis Great Southern Sale next week in Melbourne along with the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale the following week in the Gold Coast where they will be showcasing Group One winner Reaan?s first crop of foals.

Biggs was thrilled to purchase the filly, whose dam La Melba is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Flavour and has produced Raspberries, who was recently placed in the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes.

He will race the filly with his brother, Bill, and Yarradale principal Ron Sayers, who retains up to a 50 per cent share in all of his yearlings that are sold. She will be prepared by Lou Luciani.

"She's got a nice pedigree and is a good walker," Biggs said.

"For a November foal, she's a quite well-developed filly."

A half-sister to Biggs' top filly Elite Falls was one of five yearlings to top the $100,000 mark.

Ascot trainer Trevor Andrews paid $100,000 for the daughter of Soldier's Tale, whose progeny proved to be a hit at the sale.

Other Soldier's Tale yearlings to hit the $100,000 mark were a filly out of Arabian Lass bought by trainer Dan Morton, a filly out of Livelihood to Darren McAuliffe and a filly out of Musical Note to David Harrison.

Is he bred to Northern Hemisphere time? If so then I cant see the +'s of getting into 2 y/o that is 6 months behind the locals, also I see $8,000 a share, how many shares is in the colt. It will be a long wait as he wont be at a competitive age till he is late 3.
If he is bred to Southern Hemisphere time he looks a great investment, but think I read where he was bought in the UK, a huge head start he is giving

RWWA's commitment to fund base and feature stake money for the racing industry through its Distribution Model for the current year remains unchanged.
The level of base stake money for Saturday and Prime metropolitan race meetings conducted at Ascot and Belmont Park was set at $43,750 per race at the commencement of the 2010/11 racing season (mid weeks at $17,500 base) and will remain unchanged for this year. Stakes for feature races conducted at these two venues, which are fully funded by RWWA, will also be maintained at advertised levels.
Under the RWWA Distribution Policy, Race Clubs are required to return the entire amount of stakes distribution provided by RWWA back to the racing industry in prize money. Clubs may, however, elect to tier race allocations according to the type of race being held e.g. maiden races are usually run at a lower stakes level, but Clubs must expend the stakes funding it receives from RWWA in full.
Depending on the financial capability of the operations of a club, some thoroughbred clubs, in particular, ?top-up? the level of stakes for certain races. It is the prerogative of each respective club to determine the total level of stake money it advertises for each race day, provided it either matches or exceeds RWWA base stake levels.
In addition to stakes distribution, the RWWA Distribution Model provides substantial funding to Race Clubs to assist in meeting the operational cost of conducting race meetings and maintaining training facilities.
RWWA is presently working through the elements of the Distribution Model for 2011/12 and will be addressing the base and feature stakes levels for that season for metropolitan and country race clubs across the three codes.

Oakland Park to disperse star broodmare band

One of Australia's best broodmare bands will go under the hammer in Perth next year.

Neville and Susan Duncan of Oakland Park are dispersing all of their broodmares at a special session of the Magic Millions Perth Thoroughbred Sale in March.

The quality dispersal will comprise 29 lots - 11 of them having achieved black type on the track - a large percentage already proven stakes producers.

The draft will include stakes winning mares Hi On Love, Jestatune, Lady Go Bello, Most Secret, Paradise Park, Paris Petard and Umatune.

Star producing mares will also be plentiful - the dams of stars including Covertly, Grand Nirvana, Jestatune, Marasco and No Wine No Song and more set to be sold.

The majority of the mares will be present at the sale in foal - to sires including Oakland Park residents Ihtiram (sire of Miss Andretti) and Viscount (sire of Rocket Man). Other covering sires include Lonhro, Fast and Famous, O'Reilly, Blackfriars, Fath and Choisir.

The Duncans have decided to hold the dispersal as they plan to take a break from breeding - planning to spend more time with family with travel high on the agenda.

"After a very demanding and enjoyable development of Oakland Park Stud at its new location at North Jindong, we have decided to take a short sabbatical and will offer all our broodmares for sale," Neville Duncan stated.

"We will retain all foals, yearlings and current racing stock."

"Oakland Park's agistment services for outside clients will continue as normal with no change envisaged to our dedicated core staff, led by Adrian Brown. Their expert care of visiting broodmares, foals, yearlings and spelling racehorses will remain unchanged."

"Our client's mares will enjoy some of the state's best on farm facilities and we may be able to accommodate a few new customers."

"Oakland Park will continue to stand the stallions Viscount and Ihtriram."

"We are by no means leaving the breeding and racing industry behind, rather, taking the opportunity to take some time and to travel with our growing children, who are close to 'leaving the nest'."

Magic Millions Perth Manager Murray Tillett said the Oakland Park broodmare dispersal would be a highlight on the Australian thoroughbred calendar next year.

"Rarely do buyers get the opportunity to compete for such an outstanding line up of mares," Tillett said.

"Neville and Susan have built up one of the great broodmare bands in the country and these mares will all go under the hammer in late March."

"The 29 mare draft will go under the hammer at the Belmont complex following the Oaks meeting at Ascot on March 26."

"We will then hold a Thoroughbred Sale on the Sunday (March 27)," Tillett summed up.

Thoroughbred Breeders WA to assist sales with online launch

Thoroughbred Breeders WA will unveil a world-class website within two weeks and is confident the launch will be an international boost to next month?s Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.
It?s been a significant summer for local breeders, with a rebranding to Thoroughbred Breeders WA from the WA Bloodhorse Breeders? Association title, and now an upgrade of their online technology.
Electronic promotion of the Belmont Park-based yearling sale from February 9-13 will be vital to guarantee attendance by prospective overseas and interstate buyers.
The website?s address will be announced later this week. It will feature yearling sale bulletins, current global thoroughbred news, expressions of personal opinion and in-depth details of individual WA stud properties.
There?s also an orphan foal register which Colin Brown, one of the new website?s co-ordinators, rates as highly important to the thoroughbred breeding industry.
Many racing fans, concentrating on a hectic schedule of gallops meetings, would regard an orphan foal register as no more than a cute novelty on the website.
That?s not the case, says breeders? committeeman Brown.
?Welfare of orphan foals is crucial in the breeding industry?s humanitarian and commercial aspects,? Brown said.
?Virtually every stud operation faces the reality of orphaned foals, on a seasonal basis. Quick action is needed to link orphan foals with mares whose foals have died.
?The traditional orphan foal match-up method involves breeders phoning studmasters until they locate a mare which has lost its foal.
?This approach can take considerable time to find a foster mother. Internet listing is more likely to uncover a prospective nursing mare in reasonably close proximity to an orphan foal.
?Our orphan foal register will cater for farms with other horse breeds, including pacers. We could have an interchange of gallopers and pacers in the placement of orphan foals.?
Brown, who is working with a team headed by recently elected Thoroughbred Breeders WA president Ian Riley in establishing the new website, said he expected it will be ?open for business? in less than two weeks.
?The website is undergoing testing this week and we anticipate the site will be operational by January 17,? bit in its mouth, with the bit attached to a lead.
- While being ridden, every horse must be properly bridled
and saddled.
- All those working with or around horses must wear fully
enclosed, durable footwear
- Ensure a safe distance is maintained from other horses
while riding (track work) or when leading a horse.


ROAD TRAFFIC RULES (1974) da coppers :naughty:


Under the Road Traffic Act 1974, the definition of a "vehicle" includes, where the context permits, an animal being driven or ridden. As such, a ridden/driven horse has a legal right to use the road system, in accordance with the regulations governing vehicles. This means that horse riders/drivers must obey the road rules (stop, give way, keep left, signal etc).

In addition, there are specific regulations under the WA Road Traffic Code 2000 relating to people in charge of animals. These include :

Reg 267 Leading Animals

(1) A person riding an animal shall not lead more than one other animal ($50 fine)
(2) A person shall not lead an animal, while riding in a motor vehicle, or more than 2 animals while riding in any other vehicle that is not an animal ($50 fine)
(3) A person shall not drive a vehicle (that is not an animal) if an animal tethered to that vehicle is walking or running behind or alongside the vehicle while it is moving ($100 fine and 3 demerit points for the vehicle driver)

In essence this regulation means :
- you cannot lead more than one other horse if you are riding/driving a horse in harness
- you cannot lead a horse from a motor vehicle
- you can lead up to 2 horses from a non-motorised vehicle which is not an animal (ie a push bike)
- you cannot tie the horse to any sort of vehicle while it is moving.

Reg 268 Rider of an animal on a footpath or nature strip to give way to pedestrians

Riders of an animal are allowed to ride on paths and nature strips (unless otherwise signed) and drivers are required to give way to them (eg postie motorbikes). The rider of an animal must, however, give way to any pedestrian on a footpath or nature strip ($50 fine).

Reg 269 Riding an animal alongside more than one other rider

(1) The rider of an animal shall not ride on a carriageway that is not a multi-lane carriageway alongside more than one other rider, unless the rider is overtaking the other riders or droving stock. ($50 fine)
(2) The rider of an animal shall not ride in a marked lane alongside more than one other rider in a marked lane, unless the rider is overtaking the other riders or droving stock ($50 fine).
(3) If the rider of an animal is riding on a carriageway that is not a multi-lane carriageway alongside another rider, or in a marked lane alongside another rider in a marked lane, the rider shall not ride more than 1.5 metres from the other rider ($50 fine).

This regulation basically means that :
- you can't ride more than two abreast on any road that is not a multi-lane road (ie two or more lanes in each direction)
- you can't ride more than two abreast in any marked lane
- and if you are riding two abreast, then you have to be no more than 1.5 m apart

Reg 270 Proper Control of Animals

A person shall not on any road or place to which the public is permitted, whether on payment of fee or otherwise, to have access -
(a) drive or ride an animal under the influence of alcohol, drugs or alcohol and drugs to such an extent as to be incapable of haivng proper control of the animal;
(b) drive or ride an animal recklessly or without due care and attention.
(100 fine).

This regulation means you have to ride/drive in a responsible manner on the road as well as areas where the public has access (eg parks).

These are the specific rules which apply to horse riders and drivers of horses in harness. Additionally, Regulation 129 (Driving on or across a continuous white edge line) allows riders or drivers of an animal to cross over a continuous white edge line on the carriageway. This allows horses to travel on the shoulder of the road, rather than on the carriageway itself. It may also be relevant to point out that, as vehicles, horses are expected to travel in the same direction as the traffic if there is no footpath or nature strip. This is in contract to pedestrians, who are obliged, if practicable, to travel on the carriageway in the opposite direction to the traffic (facing the oncoming cars) if there is no path available.

There are also some places that horses can?t go eg Freeways and places with signs such as Roe/Tonkin Hway verges and on paths where the Council has erected No Horses signs.


STATE LAW (2010) da state :?

Horses being ridden are considered ?Vehicles?
Under traffic laws horses ridden or driven (in harness) on roads, nature strips, paths and footpaths
are treated the same as vehicles. They have the same rights and responsibilities as other vehicles,
including motor vehicles, bicycles and power assisted pedal cycles.
The following key rules are relevant:
 Riders are required to obey all the road rules that apply to drivers of motor vehicles,
including signs such as those below.

 Riding a horse on or alongside any road (other than freeways) is permitted unless a sign, says otherwise.
 There are a few areas that ridden/driven horses can go that motor vehicles are not
permitted. These include on paths and nature strips, unless otherwise signed.
 Horses can be ridden on the shoulder of a road, or to the left of any continuous edgeline, in
the same direction of traffic.
 Riders on or crossing nature strips and paths must give way to pedestrians.
 Horses can be ridden across roads but must give way to all traffic on the road.
 Horses must not be ridden across a road on a ?pedestrian crossing? or ?children?s crossing? ?
the rider must dismount and walk the horse across.
 Horses must not be ridden alongside more than one other horse on a road (or shoulder).
 Riders must give hand signals when changing direction.
Riding at night
 Riding at night can be dangerous. Horses and riders are not required by law to have lights
displayed and are therefore not easily seen. While riding on or next to roads at night should
be avoided ? riders who do should ensure a reflective vest is worn and horses have reflective
bands attached (such as reflective leg bandages)
