Q. I have two registered Warmblood mares. I plan to ride both in competition but I also would like to get offspring from them. On the other hand, I have two unregistered mares big enough for receiving the embryos, but they aren’t the same type of horse as the two Warmblood mares. One is a Haflinger-Schwarzwälder cross, and the other a Standardbred cross. A friend of mine suggested that both receiving mares would influence the foals--especially regarding future performance records--in a negative way. Is there any proof or research available about the receiving mare's effect on the foal?

A. There is data available indicating that the recipient mare does influence a foal's traits. Most of this describes the effect of recipient mare size in comparison to that of the donor mare. In a study on transfer of pony embry

These findings were supported by a study in England in which foals resulting from pony embryos transferred to Thoroughbreds were compared to foals resulting from Thoroughbred embryos transferred to ponies, and both were compared to their same-size recipient controls. The foals from embryos transferred to the “wrong” size mares were different from their control siblings not only in weight and height at birth but also in their growth patterns. At 3 years, the foals' body weight, length from head to tail, girth, cannon bone circumference, and forearm and cannon bone lengths differed from those of the control foals. In another study by the same group, foals from identical twin embryos that had been transferred to different-size recipient mares differed three inches in height at the withers at adulthood.

Much less information is available on other traits the recipient mare might influence. In an effort to evaluate this, an Austrian research group used a questionnaire based on an established "horse personality" rating to gather information about behavior of embryo transfer foals (all Warmbloods) and compare this with the behavior of their genetic sire and dam and the recipient mare. The only significant correlation found between an embryo transfer foal and the recipient mare was that of "the social motivation of the recipient mare on the learning capacity of the embryo transfer offspring." This group also reported at a meeting that the foals' impulsion under saddle appeared to be influenced by the recipient mare. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only actual research available in this area.

os to either pony or draft mares, a research group in Poland found that at maturity (4 ½ years) the pony-in-draft foals were 1.5 to 2.5 inches higher at the withers than those in pony mares, and they also had proportionately longer front legs, especially the cannons, which were almost 10% longer in proportion to body size.

Power Princess, WA's best sprinting mare, has been sold to Victorian nursery Woodside Park.

The deal between Power Princess' owners and Woodside Park was brokered by WA-born bloodstock agent Damon Gabbedy.

Power Princess will be covered by dual Group 1 winner Zoustar, who was purchased by Widden Stud last spring.

Widden had stood Zoustar's sire Northern Meteor, who died from a colic attack last July.

In a unique deal, Woodside reached an arrangement with Widden which will see Zoustar stand in Victoria twice over the next four years.

Power Princess was placed at Group 1 level in WA and SA for trainer Simon Miller.

"We are delighted to secure Power Princess, she has been one of the finest and most consistent mares to race in WA for many years," Woodside general manager Murray Tillett said.

"With our investment in Zoustar, we need to ensure we have mares of sufficient quality to send to him as well as other commercial stallions we intend to use. Power Princess fits this criteria to a T."

Power Princess arrived at Woodside yesterday and will be covered by Zoustar this year.

"She has a pedigree which is really open and gives us a lot of options going forward," Tillett said.

"With the plethora of Danehill stallions out there that makes her a pretty valuable commodity.

"It was important we could relate Eastern States form back to this mare, and in being placed to Black Caviar and beating Spirit Of Boom at Group 1 level she accomplished that."

The seven-year-old won 12 races and was placed nine times for earnings of $844,200.

Park Bloodstock for $220,000 and is by Reset (Zabeel) out of the

unplaced Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) mare Rate The Choice who

has produced one winner from one runner to date in the Ricky Yiu-

trained Graceful Kingdom (Encosta De Lago).

The colt’s third dam is Raffett (Raffindale), the dam of seven

winners including the dual Group One winner Skating (At Talaq),

herself the dam of Murtajill (Rock Of Gibraltar) and Bradbury’s Luck

(Redoute’s Choice).

“The market was very competitive, we are very happy with the

team of horses that we have assembled. Like most sales, we missed

out on some horses that we really liked but you can’t have them all,”

said Jason Timperley of Lindsay Park Racing.

“We felt that the Reset colt was an outstanding type, he was

David’s favourite colt at the sale.

“He has great size and length, and looks a real athlete. He ticked

Makybe Diva’s three-quarter brother Musket will stand the
2010 season at Ron Sayer’s Yarradale Stud after Yarradale, in
association with Eddie Rigg’s Geisel Park Stud, purchased the

Lightly raced, Musket retired a four-time winner in a career
where he defeated no less than 17 Group 1 winners and which
culminated in him winning the Shannon Stakes (Gr 2 - 1500m)

Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Gai Waterhouse will headline a who's who of interstate and overseas trainers to descend on the Perth Magic Millions yearling sale.
Waterhouse and former business partner Denise Martin, of Star Syndications, paid $180,000 for a Fastnet Rock-Munchie colt after being the underbidder on a $230,000 More Than Ready filly at their first visit to Perth's premier sale in 2010.

Star Thoroughbreds, formed by Martin and Waterhouse 20 years ago, announced two weeks ago that Waterhouse's arch rival Chris Waller would get all of its yearling purchases this year.

Waterhouse paid the top price of $1 million for a Redoute's Choice-Hades colt at the MM Gold Coast sale recently.

With young consultant James Harron as her leading adviser, Waterhouse bought 39 lots for $8.16 million, plus 15 yearlings purchased at just over $2 million under her new syndication group Round Table Racing.

Darley's trainer Peter Snowden, MM Classic-winning trainer Bjorn Baker and New Zealand's John Sargent are among other leading stables expected to attend the two days of the sale on February 18 and 19 at Belmont Park racecourse.

The decision by MM's WA manager David Houston to target Singapore trainers last weekend has reaped rewards, with leading trainers Shane Baertschiger, Steven Burridge, Michael Clements and Theo Kieser vowing to attend.

"We are also expecting the South African trainers to be back buying at the sale," Houston said.

"MM is planning a big build-up to the sale and the list of people to come from interstate and overseas is extensive."

Short answer is no.

Does any one know of any where I can see statistics that confirm the following common perceptions - I.E. is there any factual basis to these perceptions or are they just "old fisherman's tales"

95% of horses that win an early 2 year old race will not win a race after turning 4.

A mares 1st foal is no good.

A mare will no longer perform well on the track the year she turns 8.

A stayer over a stayer will not produce a good horse.

An old mare will not produce a good horse.

That's just a few.
